Villanova Attack Too Much For Friars

VILLANOVA, Pa. - In a match up of Big East Conference foes on Saturday, Dec. 8, at The Pavilion, the Villanova University women's basketball team gained its first conference victory of the season by defeating Providence College, 63-41. The Wildcats improve to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the Big East with the win. Villanova has currently won three consecutive games on the season. The Friars of Providence fall to 7-5 overall with the loss, and 2-1 in the Big East.

The Friars scored the first bucket of the game on a three-pointer by freshman guard Dee Cummings to take the first lead of the game, 3-0. The Wildcats struck back with a 10-0 run over the next 3:58 to claim a 10-3 advantage. Freshman guard Trish Juhline led the Villanova run, scoring six points on two three-pointers.

Providence would hang close early and were down by only four points, 11-7, at the 13:53 mark. The Wildcats would go on to outscore the Friars 17-1 over an 8:12 span to open up their biggest lead of the game thus far at 28-8. Junior center Brandi Barnes scored nine points for Villanova during that span. From there, the Wildcats controlled the tempo and took a 36-15 lead into the half. Barnes and Juhline led the Villanova first half attack with 16 and 11 points respectively. For Providence, forward Jen Gombotz and Chrissy Vozab each scored four points.

In the second half, the Friars would only get as close as 18 points at 44-26 with 13:47 remaining in regulation, as the Wildcats rolled to a 63-41 win. Barnes controlled the paint yet again in the second half, adding eight points down the stretch to tie her career-high of 24.

Barnes shot 11-for-20 for the game to lead Villanova, also pulling down five rebounds in 30 minutes. Scoring in double figures as well was Juhline with 16 points on six-of-10 shooting and four-of-seven from three-point territory. Freshman forward Katie Davis led the Wildcats on the boards with eight rebounds, also adding five points and four assists.

For Providence in the loss, Gombotz had a team-high 14 points, and nine rebounds. Center Monika Roberts pulled down nine boards as well, to go along with six points. Vozab also played well in defeat, shooting three-of-four for seven points.

Villanova will get back into action on Thursday, Jan. 13, hosting Pennsylvania at 7:30 p.m. Providence will resume play on Wednesday, Jan. 12, hosting Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m.
