PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Lionel Armstead scored 18 points as West Virginia handed Providence its fourth-straight loss Sunday, 82-69.
It was the first victory for West Virginia in Providence since the Mountaineers joined the Big East Conference in 1996.
Marcus Goree had his seventh double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, and Calvin Bowman added 17 points for West Virginia (10-6, 2-3 Big East).
Romuald Augustin scored a career-best 21 points for Providence (8-10, 1-4).
The Mountaineers, who never trailed in the contest, jumped out to a 20-6 lead after seven minutes in which Bowman and Armstead each scored six points.
Erron Maxey's 10 points helped the Friars erase the deficit and tie the score 30-30 with 4:08 left in the half, but the Mountaineers then built a 40-32 lead by halftime, largely due to a 12-1 edge in free throws.
Augustin scored 18 points in the second half and brought the Friars to within 51-48. The Mountaineers then pulled away, helped by poor 3-point shooting by the Friars who made just five of 24 for the game.
The Friars were also outshot at the foul line, 22 to six.
