Providence, R.I. - The Providence College Friars scored just 65 point, their fewest this season, but rode a tough, stingy defense limiting the Seton Hall Pirates to a season low 49 points in a 65-49 win at the Providence Civic Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates, who came into the game with one of the best defenses in the BIG EAST, held Providence to just 37.7% shooting (20-53) in the game but had the tables turned on them as PC held them to an identical 20-for-53 shooting for 37.7% which was the Friars best defensive effort of the season.
The win was PC's third in a row and ninth in the last 11 which improved the Friars to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST. The loss snapped Seton Hall's seven-game winning streak and dropped them to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Jamel Thomas led three Friars in double figures with 18 points and nine rebounds. Erron Maxey added 11 points and Kendrick Moore chipped in ten for the Black and White. Duane Jordan led Seton Hall with 13 points and Shaheen Holloway added 12.
Both teams struggled in the first half with Seton Hall shooting 34.5% (10-29) and the Friars 32.1% (9-28). A Thomas hook shot with 4:03 left in the half gave PC its biggest lead at 23-17. Only a three-pointer by Moore with a minute to go in the half kept the Friars in front after 20 minutes at 26-23.
PC's full court pressure helped the Friars start the second half with an 8-0 run and open an 11-point lead just 1:31 into the half at 34-23. That was all part of a 21-4 Friar run over the first seven minutes of the second half that gave PC a 47-27 lead at 13:06.
But the Pirates would come back. Seton Hall turned the tables on the Friars as they went on a 19-6 run that was capped by a Rimas Kaukenas three that cut PC's lead to 53-46 with 4:46 left in the game.
That would be as close as the Pirates would get though as PC made five of eight free throws in the final two minutes and got key baskets from Thomas and Maxey for the final score of 65-49.
PC outrebounded Seton Hall by a 37-31 margin. The Friars forced 22 turnovers in the game, but made 20 of their own including seven by Thomas. PC was 19-22 from the free throw line while Seton Hall was just five of nine.
The Friars return to action on Tuesday night, January 5th when they host West Virginia in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Providence Civic Center.
