SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Jamel Thomas scored 19 points and Erron Maxey added 14 Tuesday night as Providence took advantage of No. 18 Syracuse's poor shooting for a 67-58 victory.
It was the fifth win in six games for Providence (11-5, 4-3 Big East), and it was a real gift from the Orangemen (11-4, 3-3).
Syracuse, which led 36-29 at halftime, went suddenly cold at the start of the second period and stayed that way. The Orangemen missed seven straight 3s and made just one of their first 10 foul shots.
Providence was not about to pass up the opportunity. The Friars responded with an 11-2 run as Jamel Thomas had seven points and Leon Brisport added two layups for a 40-38 lead with 15:13 left.
While Syracuse tried and failed from long range and went scoreless for more than six minutes, the Friars pulled away to a 57-49 lead on a layup by Justin Farley, who had 12 points.
Providence did its best to give Syracuse a chance, missing nine straight free throws. The misses did little harm, however, because the Friars got the rebound four straight times at one point and outrebounded the Orangemen 51-41 overall.
Allen Griffin led Syracuse with 18 points and Tony Bland had 11. Flu-bitten Jason Hart, who sat on the bench during the turning point of the game, scored just six points. Etan Thomas had nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Friars began the game with authority, scoring the first two baskets of the night on resounding dunks by Erron Maxey and Jamel Thomas. But after a layup by John Linehan with 16:51 left in the first period, the Orangemen took over, holding the Friars without a basket for six minutes.
Backup center Elvir Ovcina keyed a 21-3 Syracuse surge with three assists, two blocks and a steal, and added a hook in the lane. Ovcina fed Damone Brown for a fast-break dunk to put the Orangemen ahead 23-11 with 7:55 left.
