BOSTON - Jamel Thomas scored a game-high 27 points, including a pair of key jumpers 31 seconds apart late in the game, to lift the Providence Friars to an 89-77 Big East win over Boston College on Sunday afternoon.
Sean Connolly added a career-high 22 points and Kendrick Moore had 10 points for the Friars (12-5 overall, 5-3 league).
Michael Cotton paced the Eagles (3-12, 0-7), losers of six straight, with 20 points. Boston College shot a season-high 56.6 percent (30-of-53).
The teams traded the lead seven times in the opening four minutes of the second half before the Friars went in front for good on Llewellyn Cole's dunk with just under 13 minutes to play.
The Eagles, who hit their first seven shots after intermission, had pulled to a 56-51 edge on Brian Ross's short jumper with 15 1/2 minutes to go, but Providence went on a 10-0 run over the ensuing four minutes. Thomas had a dunk and John Linehan a fast-break layup before Cole's basket moved the Friars ahead.
Boston College sliced the gap to 70-69 on two free throws by Cotton and had a chance to take the lead, but Willie Deane missed a short jumper. Thomas, who rebounded the missed shot, then sandwiched a 3-pointer and a fallaway jumper around a basket by Cotton to push the Frairs ahead 75-71 with 3:39 to go.
Following Thomas's two baskets, Providence went on an 8-2 run to seal the win.
The Friars, who fell behind 24-15 nearly eight minutes into the game, rebounded with an 18-2 run en route to a 42-41 lead at intermission.
