(Providence, R.I.)....For the second preseason game in a row, Providence College's Jamel Thomas turned in a double-double as the Friars placed five players in double figures in a 107-81 rout of Marathon. The win evened PC's preseason record at 1-1 as Tim Welsh's Friars now prepare for their season opener on Monday, November 9th against Vanderbilt in the CoSIDA Classic in Providence.
Thomas scored a PC high 23 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the Friars. Freshman guard Sean Connolly followed with 17 points including four three-pointers. Steady Erron Maxey added 14, Justin Farley scored 12 and Jamaal Camah added 10 in the win. John Linehan scored five points but dished out 11 assists in the game. PC racked up 34 assists in the game. Lazell Durden led Marathon with 35 points (12-21 FG,, 7-13 3PT, 4-4 FT) and Paul Culbertson added 25.
Providence outrebounded Marathon by a 41-22 margin and shot 55.8% (43-77) for the game. Providence made 11 of 23 three-point attempts on the night.
Providence pressed and ran most of the game taking the lead for good at the 16:44 mark of the first half on Kendrick Moore's jumper to make it 10-8. The Friars led 54-39 at the half and saw the lead go to 30 at 105-75 before the final buzzer sounded.
The CoSIDA Classic is next for the Friars. Rhode Island will play Texas Christian University at 6:30 p.m. in the first game with PC-Vanderbilt set for 9:00 p.m. On Tuesday, November 10, the Friars play TCU at 6:30 p.m. and Rhode Island will face Vanderbilt at 9:00 p.m. Good seats remain for this two-day tournament and can be purchased at the Providence Civic Center.
