Friars Split With Seton Hall On The Baseball Diamond

South Orange, New Jersey - Senior righthander Marc DesRoches pitched a two-hitter and Providence College scored all the runs he would need in the first inning as the Friars shutout Seton Hall, 2-0, in the first game of their BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates rebounded in the nightcap breaking the game open with a seven-run eight inning on the way to an 11-2 win at Owen Carroll Field.
The split gives PC a 32-12 overall record and an 8-7 league record. Seton Hall is now 18-12-1 on the year and 8-6 in BIG EAST play.
DesRoches improved his record to 9-1 on the season, 5-0 in BIG EAST play by giving up just two hits in the seven inning first game. He struck out one and walked one, facing just two batters over the limit. Seton Hall's John Probst gave up just four hits along with one earned run to fall to 3-2 on the year.
PC got all the runs DesRoches would need in the first as Mike Scott led off with a single. With two outs, Keith Reed singled to center and when the ball got away from Mike Bascom, Scott scored with Reed taking second. Freshman Neal McCarthy followed with an rbi single and PC had a 2-0 lead for the only scoring in the game.
In game two, Seton Hall took a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning against PC starter Rob Corraro. The big righthander gave up a leadoff single to Brian McGee and he was sacrificed to second by John Bravette. Third baseman Ray Navarrete was intentionally walked and lefthander Mike Stuart relieved Corraro. The sophomore gave up a single, a walk and three doubles and Seton Hall scored seven runs for an 11-1 lead.
The Friars got two in the ninth on a two-run single by Keith Reed that led to the 11-3 final. PC was led by Scott, Reed and Jamie Athas as each had two hits in the game.
Corraro fell to 6-3 on the year with the loss while Cameron Esslinger pitched 8-and-1/3 innings, striking out 10 and walking one to improve his record to 3-2 on the year.
The two teams meet on Sunday at Seton Hall for a single game that will begin at 12 Noon.
