South Orange, New Jersey - Rookie outfielders Mike Scott and Neal McCarthy proved too much for Seton Hall to handle as the Friars duo was 9-for-11 with five rbi's to pace Providence to a 10-8 win the Pirates in BIG EAST action at Seton Hall's Owen Carroll Field on Sunday afternoon.
Scott, the Friars leadoff man was 5-for-6 with four runs scored, two doubles, a triple and an rbi while McCarthy was 4-for-5 on the day with two doubles and four runs batted in to pace the PC attack.
Senior righthander Josh Burnham went 7-and-1/3 innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. He got relief help from sophomore Andy Scott who didn't give up a hit over the final 1-and-2/3 innings to pick up his second save of the season. Seton Hall starter B.J. Benik lasted just two innings, giving up five hits and four runs as his record fell to 2-3 on the year. He was the first of four Pirates' pitchers on the afternoon.
Scott started the Friars off right with a leadoff triple, his single season record ninth at Providence College. He scored on a fielder's choice by Paul Costello who was safe on a Seton Hall errror. Costello came around to score on a Keith Reed sacrifice fly.
After Seton Hall tied the game in the bottom of the second, the Friars went ahead to stay with three runs in the third. McCarthy delivered the key hit, a two-run double down the first base line.
The Friars lead would grow to 9-4 after six innings and 10-6 going into the bottom of the eighth. After a single and an error put runners on first and second, Burnham surrendered an rbi-double to designated hitter Alfie Critelli. Scott was brought in to face Jeff Miller who walked. Tony Calabrese bounced one back to Scott who got the force at home, but catcher Dan Conway's throw to first for a double play got away and pinch-runner Isaac Pavlik scored to make it 10-8. Scott then got Shawn Tarkington to fly to left to end the threat and then pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The win improves Providence to 33-12 overall and 9-7 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall is now 18-13-1 on the year and 8-7 in the league.
Providence will return to action on Tuesday, April 20th when they play a single game at Brown beginning at 3:00 p.m.
