Providence, R.I. - Freshman lefthander Ryan Lewis pitched a nine inning complete game and fellow rookies Jamie Athas and Neal McCarthy each had three hits to lead the Providence College Friars to an 11-5 win over crosstown rivals, Brown University Tuesday afternoon at Aldrich-Dexter Field. Junior outfielder Jason Hairston also had three hits in the game.
Lewis gave up nine hits and five earned runs in going the distance for the second time this year. The rookie southpaw struck out four and walked none in improving his record to 6-2. Brown starter Jason Lucas pitched five innings to take the loss and go to 0-3 for the Bears.
A native of Newport Beach, California, Lewis survived a shaky first inning giving up two runs as he surrendered back-to-back doubles to Joe Stepp and Dan Kantrovitz and an rbi single to Jeff Lawler before getting out of the inning down 2-0. He surrendered a solo homer to Pete DeYoung in the third and PC trailed 3-0.
Lucas kept the Friars at bay until the fourth inning when they came up with four runs on four hits and three Brown errors. Rbi singles by McCarthy, Angelo Ciminiello and Athas put PC ahead to stay at 4-3.
Ciminiello delivered his second rbi of the day in the fifth as he drove in Keith Reed who had doubled to start the inning.
Lewis was on his way to retiring 14 in a row with the aid of a double play. Meanwhile, the Friars put up four more runs in the top of the seventh. McCarthy doubled home Reed who had been hit by a pitch and stole second. After Ciminiello reached on an error by the third baseman with McCarthy moving to third. McCarthy scored on a single to right by Athas. When the rightfielder misplayed the hit, Athas was on second and Ciminiello at third. Catcher Dan Conway grounded out scoring Ciminiello and Hairston singled to right scoring Athas for a 9-5 PC lead.
Kantrovitz, the Brown shortstop ended Lewis' streak of 14 in a row with one out in the eighth as he hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot.
The Friars added two more in the ninth. McCarthy tripled to center and two outs later, Conway hit homered to left center for his ninth home run of the season giving the Friars an 11-4 lead.
Lewis surrendered a solo homer to Darren Merten in the bottom of the ninth just the third hit he gave up in the final 19 batters he faced for the 11-5 final score.
Providence returns to BIG EAST action on Wednesday when they travel to Boston College for a single game at 3:00 p.m. at BC's Commander Shea Field.
