CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore outfielder Mike Scott hit for the cycle and sophomore lefthander Andy Scott bounced back from a freak injury as the duo led the Friars to an 8-3 BIG EAST win at Boston College on Wednesday afternoon.
Mike Scott, a four-time BIG EAST Rookie of the Week selection, doubled in the first, gave PC a 3-0 lead in the third with a three-run homer, singled in the fifth and tripled home two insurance runs in the ninth for a five rbi game.
The Darien, Connecticut native leads the nation in triples with ten on the season and is now hitting .413 in his first season for the Friars. His 85 hits this season ties a Providence College single season record set by John McDonald in 1995.
Sidelined by an injury last season, Scott has hit four homers this season with 49 rbi's as the Friars' leadoff man.
The Friars' other Scott, Andy, pitched six-and-two-third innings giving up six hits, three earned runs while walking one and striking out three.
On Tuesday at Brown, Andy Scott was hit in the face by an errant warmup throw. The throw hit him in the mouth, knocking out a tooth and chipping another. While his teammates were defeating Brown, Scott was in a dentist's chair having the tooth saved and the chipped one repaired. He bounced back in fine style to improve his record to 4-1 on the season.
Scott got relief help from PC ace Marc DesRoches who pitched the final two-and-one-third innings without giving up a hit and striking out two for his first save of the season.
BC starter Paul Bibbo took the loss pitching six-and-one-third innnings giving up five runs, four earned on seven hits. He is 1-1 on the season.
The win improves the Friars to 35-12 overall and 10-7 in the BIG EAST. Boston College is now 16-16 on the year with a 4-10 league record.
Providence travels to Rutgers this weekend for a BIG EAST doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Game time both days is 12:00 noon.
