Providence, R.I. - The Providence College Friars ran their winning streak to eight in a row behind strong pitching from freshman Ryan Lewis and clutch relief pitching from senior Todd Murray in a 9-7 win over the Quinnipiac College Braves on Wednesday at PC's Hendricken Field.
Lewis pitched seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out five to improve his record to 2-1. Murray stopped the Braves ninth inning rally after Quinnipiac had scored four runs to cut the lead to 9-7. He struck out Toby Peterson and Scott Moulton with runners on first and second to record his second save of the year.
The win improved the Friars to 14-3 overall while Quinnipiac falls to 2-5 on the season.
Providence got to Braves' starter John Casey and reliever Pat Lynch for five runs in the third highlighted by O'Keefe's bases clearing double. O'Keefe scored on the play when shortstop Charles D'Elia's relay throw reached the Providence dugout. Keith Reed followed with his second double of the game, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Lynch wild pitch. Casey took the loss to fall to 0-2.
After Quinnipiac cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth on a two-run single by second baseman John Stadalnik, the Friars added two in their half of the fifth. Mike Scott singled, Paul Costello was walked and Reed delivered an rbi single that scored Scott and moved Costello to third. Reed then stole second and when the catcher's throw sailed into center field, Costello scored.
PC got two more in the sixth as Scott drove in one run and later scored on a double steal with Costello.
D'Elia cut the Friars' lead to 9-3 with his first homer in the top of the seventh to close the book on Lewis. After senior Scott Swanjord pitched a hitless eighth, sophomore Mike Stuart came on to pitch the ninth.
Back-to-back singles by Miles Dudley and Tim Mangano put runners at first and third. D'Elia's grounder to short was mishandled by Jamie Athas and put runners at first and second with a run in. Stuart then walked Stadalnik which brought on Murray. Colin McDonald flew out to right before Joe Zangari singled in a pair of runs and Sal Puccio followed by driving in Stadalnik to make it 9-7. Murray then got the two big strikeouts to give PC the win.
The Friars return to action on Saturday when they host the University of Maine in a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
