Friars Bomb Connecticut In Doubleheader Sweep

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Friars scored 39 runs and pounded out 47 hits as they swept a pair of games from the University of Connecticut winning the first game 14-2 and the second, 25-18 in a game that set several BIG EAST scoring records.

The two wins improved the Friars to 26-9 overall and 3-5 in BIG EAST play while Connecticut fell to 14-12 on the season and 1-7 in league action.

Game one saw the Friars pound out 17 hits on the way to a 14-2 win. Senior third baseman Angelo Ciminiello led the way with a 4-for-5 game including a three-run homer and five rbi's. Sophomore first baseman Mike O'Keefe was 2-for-3 with a home run and three rbi's. Freshman Jamie Athas also homered for the Friars, the first of his collegiate career.

Senior righthander Marc DesRoches pitched 5-and-2/3 innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. Freshman Patrick Sperone took the loss for the Huskies to fall to 3-2.

Game two saw the Friars fall behind 9-2 in the second inning, but the offense picked up as the Friars pounded out a BIG EAST record 30 hits on the way to the 25-18 win. The two teams combined for a BIG EAST record 50 hits and 43 runs in the game.

Sophomore Mike Scott, junior Keith Reed and sophomore Dan Conway all had five hits for the Friars. All three had home runs in the game with Conway getting two solo shots for afternoon. O'Keefe and Reed each drove in four runs as seven of the Friars nine starters drove in two or more runs. Scott set a BIG EAST record with six runs scored in the game.

UConn got a record tying performance from senior outfielder Clarke Caudill who was 4-for-6 on the game with a BIG EAST tying 10 rbi's in the game.

Sophomore lefthander Andy Scott got the win (3-1) in relief and senior Josh Burnham pitched 4-and2/3 innings of relief to record a save. Mark Monkiewicz (0-2) took the loss as the Friars knocked five UConn pitchers for the 30 hits.

Only Connecticut leadoff man Brian Tisbert failed to get a hit in the game and still scored four runs for the Huskies via three walks and a fielder's choice.

PC returns to BIG EAST action on Wednesday when they travel to Boston College for a single game at Commander Shea Field. Game time at Chestnut Hill is 3:00 p.m.
