PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College baseball standout, ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) has been named a First Team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American for the 1999 season. The Friars' third baseman is joined by Harvard's Andrew Huling as the only two players from District I named to any of the three national teams.

For Ciminiello, this is the second time he has been named to the national team after being selected last year as a Third Team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American. He has also been selected to the District I team the last three seasons. The Friars everyday third baseman, Ciminiello helped guide the 1999 Friars to the BIG EAST Championship and the finals of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional where they lost to second-seeded Florida State, 14-3, in the final game.

Ciminiello and his Friars turned in a school record 49-16 season while he was named Second Team All-BIG EAST and First Team All-New England. For the year, the St. James, New York native hit .322 with 14 home runs and 58 rbi's. He finished his career as Providence College's all-time rbi leader with 163 as his final four rbi's came on a grand slam in the NCAA Tournament versus The Citadel in a 12-1 win.

A team co-captain, Ciminiello finished his academic career with a 3.73 grade point average in Biology-Pre Med. He will attend Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia next fall. He has already been selected the BIG EAST's Scholar Athlete of the Year and was the winner of Providence College's Vincent McAndrew Award as the graduating senior athlete with the top grade point average.

The 6-1, 195-pound Ciminiello finishes his Providence College baseball career ranked in the top ten of many offensive categories. He is first in runs batted in (163) and third in total bases (365). He is third in runs scored (161) and fifth in slugging percentage (.570). His 31 career home runs tie him for fourth in that department while he is sixth in hits (215) and he closes out his career with and average of .336.
