PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College hockey coach Paul Pooley today announced that student-athletes Cody Loughlean of Innisfail, Alberta, John Luszcz of Ludlow, Mass., Jason Platt of Portola Valley, Calif., and Dominic Torretti of Ludlow, Mass., each have signed a national letter of intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2000.

Loughlean, a 5-foot-9-inch, 185-pound forward, is playing in his fourth season for the North Battleford North Stars of Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Currently, Loughlean leads the SJHL in scoring with 48 points (23 goals, 25 assists) in 28 games. He also ranks second in the SJHL in assists (25) and power-play goals (10) and is third in goals scored (23). Loughlean was recently selected to the SJHL All-Star team which will compete at the Viking Cup Tournament at the end of December. Loughlean, a 1998 graduate of North Battleford Comprehensive High School, is the son of Vern and Trudy Loughlean.

"Cody Loughlean is a highly skilled forward with explosive speed and toughness," Pooley said. "He is very tenacious and creates offensive opportunities with his speed."

Luszcz, a 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pound forward, is playing in his second season for the New England Junior Coyotes of the Eastern Junior Hockey League. This season, Luszcz has scored 14 goals and added 13 assists in 16 games for the Coyotes. He ranks first in the EJHL in goals (14) and is fifth in scoring. Luszcz was a member of the U.S. Select 17 Team that competed in the Four Nations Tournament in the Czech Republic last summer. Luszcz serves as an assistant captain for the Coyotes. He is the son of John Luszcz and Tamie Oliveira. Luszcz attends Ludlow High School.

"John Luszcz is a highly skilled forward with a great scoring touch," Pooley stated. "He has an excellent release on his shot and should develop into a consistent scorer at the collegiate level."

Platt, a 6-foot-1-inch, 205-pound defenseman, is playing in his second season for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League. Prior to playing for Omaha, Platt helped Cushing Academy capture the NEPSIHA Division I title in 1998. He was a member of the U.S. Select 16 Team in 1997. Platt, who currently attends Westside High School in Omaha, Neb., is the son of Jerry and Cathy Platt.

"Jason Platt is a big, strong and mobile defenseman," Pooley said. "He plays very physical and adds energy to the game. Jason is a defensive defenseman."

Torretti, a 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman, is playing in his first season for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. He is a 1999 graduate of Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Conn. At Avon, Torretti earned the Brian Leetch Award as the Most Valuable Defenseman in 1998-99. His brother, Nick, is a sophomore forward at Merrimack College. Torretti is the son of Dominic and Deborah Torretti.

"Dominic Toretti is a solid two-way defenseman," Pooley stated. "He will give us excellent depth on defense and eventually will play in all key situations."

"All four of these players will be able to help our team next season," Pooley said. "Cody Louglean and John Luszcz are each of one the top forwards in their leagues and Jason Platt and Dominic Torretti are two strong defensemen. This recruiting class will give us depth next season and help us to continue our efforts to have one of the top collegiate hockey programs in the country."
