RALEIGH, N.C. - Anthony Grundy tied his career high with 18 points, including a basket with 30 seconds to go, to help North Carolina State to a 64-60 win over Providence on Saturday.
The Wolfpack (5-0) was ahead by 10 points with seven minutes to go but the Friars (3-4) whittled the lead to 57-50 on Romuald Augustin's 3 with 5:09 to go.
Providence then got to within three points at 59-56 on David Murray's free throw with 2:59 left, but Grundy made two free throws nine seconds later to restore N.C. State's lead to 61-56. Then Grundy intercepted a pass in the backcourt and raced in for the layup to seal the win.
In the first half, Providence tied the score at 11 on John Linehan's layup off a steal with 12:51 to go, but Gainey hit a 3-pointer to spark an 11-4 Wolfpack run. Grundy's 3 with six minutes left put the Wolfpack ahead 22-15.
N.C. State allowed Providence, which shot only 27 percent in the first half, to make only two baskets in the final five minutes as Damien Wilkins scored eight points in a 14-6 run to inflate the Wolfpack's lead to 36-21 at halftime.
Grundy, who also pulled down eight rebounds, scored a career-high 18 points, on Wednesday in the Wolfpack's 61-59 win over No. 21 Purdue.
