A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS...

Coach Debbie Taneyhill's Patriots are coming off a 13-14 season, but finished third in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a 10-6 mark in 1998-99. Now in her third season overall and second full year, Taneyhill owns a 23-24 record running the Patriots. GMU returns nine letter winners including four starters. Leading the way for the Patriots are First Team All-CAA choices Trish Halpin and Jen Surlas. Halpin, a 6-3 senior forward, was second on the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game and 6.6 rebounds while playing over 35 minutes per game last season. Surlas, a 5-8 junior guard, led the CAA in scoring with 18.1 points per game while averaging 15.6 overall for the season. The high scoring guard hit 56 threes a year ago. The other returning starters for George Mason are senior forward Chrissy Todd and senior point guard Courtney Kaup who led the team with 147 assists.

FOR OPENERS...

The Friars come into tonight's opening game versus George Mason with a 17-7 record in season opening games. PC is 20-4 in home openers and 13-11 in their first road games of the season. The Friars are 1-2 in season openers under Jim Jabir.

A LOOK BACK AT 1998-99....

Providence struggled in the scoring department all season long as the Friars averaged just 62.7 points per game while being outrebounded by an average of 9.1 per game. The Friars were 5-22 overall and 4-14 in the BIG EAST, which put them 12th overall. Junior forward Monika Roberts led PC in scoring as a sophomore with 12.4 points per game and 5.8 rebounds. Senior guard Meghan Hinds was the only other Friar in double figures with 10.1 points per game and 3.4 rebounds. Overall, PC returns its top five scorers and four of its five starters from last season.

OUT OF ACTION....

Sophomore forward Catrina Hawley-Stewart is out indefinitely after suffering a high ankle sprain in the preseason game versus the Nor'Easter Storm on November 11th.

25th ANNIVERSARY....

The Friars begin their 25th season of Division I competition in tonight's regular season and home opener against the George Mason University Patriots. Providence has recorded an all-time mark of 440-262 in the first 702 games played for a .634 winning percentage. The Friars own three BIG EAST regular season titles (1983, 1986, 1990), one BIG EAST Tournament Championship (1990), one trip to the WNIT (1987) and five NCAA appearances (1986, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992).

NEXT FOR THE FRIARS...

PC takes to the road following tonight's game as the Friars participate in the Lady Tiger Classic in Memphis, Tennessee on November 26 and 27th. The tournament features the University of Memphis, Rice University and Samford University. The Friars open versus the University of Memphis on the 26th in a 6:00 p.m. game. The Lady Tigers were 22-10 last season. PC has never faced Memphis, Rice or Samford in women's basketball.

NEXT HOME GAME...

The Friars are next at home on Friday, December 3rd when they host the University of Rhode Island in a 7:00 p.m. game. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865-GOPC.

The Friars were 1-1 in the preseason. On November 5th, PC dropped a 69-55 decision to the Australian Institute of Sports. Monika Roberts led the Friars with 16 points and seven rebounds while Dani Trippany scored ten points and added seven rebounds in the loss. The Friars had six players in double figures with Meghan Hinds leading the way with 19 points. Roberts scored 14 points and had ten rebounds while Catrina Hawley-Stewart had 10 points and and 14 points before injuring her ankle in the second half.

ALUMNI HALL...

The Friars have compiled a 216-78 (.734) record in 24 seasons in Alumni Hall. PC was just 3-9 at home during the 1998-99 season. The three wins were the fewest ever by a PC team at Alumni Hall.

GOOD AS NEW...

PC center Dani Trippany returns to the lineup this season after missing all but the season opener last year due to stress fractures in both feet. The 6-5 junior from Massena, New York started the season with a great game against nationally-ranked Arkansas, leading PC with 16 points and eight rebounds in the opener before going on the shelf for the remainder of the season.
