PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (2-6, 0-4) HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS DROP TWO GAMES TO NEW HAMPSHIRE... Last week, the Friars posted a 0-2 record against the New Hampshire Wildcats. On November 12, the Friars were defeated by New Hampshire, 3-2, in overtime on a goal by Sean Austin at 1:31 of the extra period at Durham, N.H. PC's goals were scored by freshman Shawn Weiman (Marshall, Saskatchewan) and senior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta). Freshman goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) made his first collegiate start and recorded 19 stops in the loss. The following night, the Friars were defeated in their home opener by UNH, 2-1. PC's only goal was scored by senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario). Junior Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) registered 23 saves for the Friars.
PISANI RANKS 27th IN SCORING... Senior left wing Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) ranks 27th all-time in scoring at PC with 121 points (44 goals, 77 assists) in 117 games. Pisani is tied for the team lead in scoring this season with six points (two goals, four assists). On November 12, he scored a short-handed goal and notched one assist in the team's 3-2 overtime loss at New Hampshire. For Pisani, the two points marked his second multiple-point game of the season and the 31st of his career. Last season, Pisani finished first on the team in assists (37) and second on the squad in scoring (51 points). He has recorded three or more points in a game 12 times in his career and has registered four or more points in a game four times in his career. He is a 1996 eighth-round draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers.
SHEPPARD SCORES ON THE POWER PLAY... Senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) leads the team in goals (five) and is tied for the team lead in scoring (six points). On November 13, Sheppard scored PC's only goal in a 2-1 loss to New Hampshire. Sheppard has tallied all five of his goals this season in man-advantage situations. Last year, Sheppard played in all 38 games and finished sixth on the team in scoring with 29 points (15 goals, 14 assists). His biggest contribution came in man-down situations. Sheppard tallied four short-handed goals and finished tied for second in the nation in that category.
NO SCORING IN FIVE VS. FIVE... The PC offense has hit a scoring drought in five-on-five situations. After PC's 2-1 loss to New Hampshire on November 13, Providence has played 296 minutes and 34 seconds without registering a goal in a five-on-five situation. The team's last five-on-five goal was scored by Heath Gordon at 4:57 of the first period in a 5-2 loss at Miami on October 23.
NEXT WEEK... The Friars will play a home-and-home series against Northeastern. The Friars posted a 1-2-0 record against the Huskies last season.
THE PROVIDENCE-NORTHEASTERN SERIES... Friday's game will be the 105th meeting between the two schools. Providence leads the all-time series 62-35-7. The two teams first met on Dec. 22, 1953 with Northeastern defeating Providence, 5-4, in overtime at the Boston Garden. PC's last win against the Huskies was a 5-3 victory on Jan. 8, 1999 at Matthews Arena. The last time PC was defeated by Northeastern, the Friars dropped a 6-5 overtime decision on March 7, 1999 at Matthews Arena.
AT MATTHEWS ARENA... Since 1957 the Friars have posted a 29-18-4 mark against the Huskies at Matthews Arena. In the Friars' last game at Matthews Arena, the Huskies defeated PC, 6-5, in overtime on March 7, 1999. PC's last win at Matthews Arena was a 5-3 victory on January 8, 1999.
AT SCHNEIDER ARENA... The Friars have posted a 17-15-3 mark against Northeastern at Schneider Arena. PC's last win against the Huskies at Schneider Arena was a 6-4 victory on January 9, 1998. PC's last loss to Northeastern at Schneider Arena was a 5-4 defeat on January 9, 1999.
LAST SEASON VS. THE HUSKIES... The Friars recorded a 1-2 mark against Northeastern last season. On January 8, the Friars earned a 5-3 win against the Huskies at Matthews Arena. The Friars were led by Doug Sheppard who scored two goals, including the game winner. The Friars' other goals were scored by Jason Ialongo, Jon Cameron and Fernando Pisani. Boyd Ballard recorded 34 stops in the win. The following night, Northeastern overcame a two-goal deficit in the final three minutes of the game to earn a 5-4 win against the Friars. PC's goals were scored by Cameron, Pisani, Ialongo and Jerry Keefe. Ballard recorded 30 stops in the loss. In the final game of the season between the two teams, NU defeated PC, 6-5, in overtime. Jay Leach, Heath Gordon, Mike Omicioli, Troy Lake and Jon Cameron. Ballard registered 23 stops in the loss.
