WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... The PC women's team finished 14th among 31 teams at the NCAA Championships on November 23 at Lawrence, Kansas. The Friars scored 386 points to finish behind first place Villanova (106). Georgetown was fourth with 199 points. This marked the first time in ten years that Providence's women's team did not finish in the Top 10.

Leading the way for Providence and capturing All-America honors was sophomore Rachel Hixson (Media, PA). Hixson covered the 5,000 meter course at Rim Rock Farm in 17:20.32 for a 13th place finish. Senior Sarah Dupre (Cambridge, Ontario) was 29th in 17:40.56.

Other PC scorers were:

 96.  Gladys Ganiel (Sr., Harrington, Me.) -      18:28.04;
120.  Heather Cappello (Fr., Lockport, N.Y.) -    18:41.46;
128.  Francine Darroch (So., Cambridge, Ontario) -18:48.40.

Also finishing for Providence were Dana Ostrander (Jr., Ballston Lake, N.Y.) in 175th in 19:18.74 and Stephanie O'Reilly (So., Wicklow, Ireland) was 212th overall.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (2-2)...The Friars opened the season with three evened their record at 2-2 after defeating Texas-Pan American, 88-78 on Saturday, November 21. Jamel Thomas (Sr., Broolklyn, N.Y.) was one of five Friars in double figures as he poured in a game high 29 points with seven rebounds. Erron Maxey (So., Lake Elsinore, Cal.) had a career high 20 points and added 11 rebounds for the second double-double of his career. Freshman Sean Connolly (Peabody, Mass.) had 15 points, Corey Wright (Sr., New York, N.Y.) had a career best 12 point game, making five of six from the floor while Jamaal Camah (So., Salem, Mass.) made his first career start scoring 10 points for the Black and White.

PC jumped out to a 48-28 halftime lead only to see Texas-Pan Am cut the lead to 60-57 with just under nine minutes left. After a PC time out, Maxey converted a three-point play and Connolly buried two three-pointers to up the lead to 12 and the Friars held on for the win.

PC faces North Carolina State on Tuesday at the Civic Center. Game time is 8:00 p.m. The Friars travel to Cleveland State on Saturday for a 7:35 game against the Vikings.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (3-1-1, 2-1-1)... The women's hockey team posted a 2-0 mark on Nov. 20-21. On Nov. 20, the Friars defeated Dartmouth, 3-1, at Schneider Arena. Sophomore Valerie Bono (Woburn, Mass.), freshman Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.) and sophomore Corinne Rosen (Milwaukee, Wis.) all scored for PC. Sophomore goaltender Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) registered 39 stops in net. On Nov. 21, PC earned a 5-1 win against Boston College at Schneider Arena. Senior Katie Lachapelle (Lewiston, Maine) and Rosen each tallied two goals to lead the offense. Sophomore Jessica Tabb (Springfield, Mass.) also scored for the Friars. DeCosta and freshman Brigid Keady (Glencoe, Ill.) combined to record 19 stops in the win.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men's cross country team turned in its best performance at the NCAA Championships since 1995 with a 10th place finish among 31 teams at Lawrence, Kansas.

The Friars were the top BIG EAST finisher with 339 points. The University of Arkansas led the way with 97 points followed by Stanford, Colorado, Michigan and Oregon in the Top Five.

Leading the way for the men and picking up All-America honors for the second time was senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) who covered the 10,000 meter course in a time of 30:37.10 to finish 11th. He was followed by junior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) who was an All-America for the first time as he finished 13th in 30:45.60.

Rounding out the top scorers for the Friars were freshman Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Ireland (63rd - 31:50.00), junior Larry Morrissey of Waterford, Ireland (110th - 32:34.60) and senior Zack Ventress of Spokane, Washington (142nd - 33:04.30). Senior Rick Bush of Schenectady, New York was 157th in 33:20.50 and Ciaran Lynch (So., Limerick, Ireland) was 194th in 34:23.90.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL...(0-1).....The Friars have not played since their season opening loss to Arkansas last Monday, 59-110. The Friars return to action on Tuesday, November 24th when they host Wake Forest at the Providence Civic Center as part of a PC-ACC doubleheader. Game time is 5:30 p.m. before the Providence-North Carolina State game. The Friars will go the next 4-6 weeks without starting center Dani Trippany who will be sidelined with a stress fracture in her foot. Sophomore Abby Charbonneau is also sitting out while rehabing her two offseason knee surgeries.

MEN'S (3-2) AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (3-3)... The women's swim team dropped a 144-93 decision to Northeastern on Monday, November 14 in Boston, MA. The 200 medley relay unit of Jane Thompson, Karen Cardwell, Carla Clemente and Maggie Singler took first place honors for the Friars to put PC out in front early. Sophomore Lori Cosman won two events including the 1000 free (10:48.16) and the 500 free (5:24.53). Senior Carla Clemente also brought home an individual honor as she captured first in the 200 free (1:58.68). At Boston College last weekend, both squads defeated Niagara University. The men's squad won by the score of 73-66 and the women won, 89-44. The Friars swim at the URI Invitational on December 4-5.

MEN'S HOCKEY (5-5, 3-3)... The Providence College Friars were defeated in two games against the Maine Black Bears on Nov. 20-21. On Nov. 20, PC was defeated by Maine, 6-1, at Alfond Arena. Junior Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.) tallied the lone goal for the Friars. Sophomore Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) and senior Mark Kane (St. Albert, Alberta) combined to post 17 saves in net for the Friars. The following night, the Friars were defeated 3-2 by the Black Bears. Senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) and junior Rich Miller (Bethany, Conn.) each scored for PC. Kane recorded 26 stops in the loss.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Sophomore Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.) picked up her first All-American honors by finishing 13th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on November 23rd. Hixson helped PC to a 14th place finish. She covered the 5,000 meter course in 17:20.32

Senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) and junior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) took All-American honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championships at Lawrence, Kansas on November 23. Noad finished 11th in 30:37.10 and Kelly was 13th in 30:45.60. Providence finished 10th among 31 teams, its best finish since 1995 on the men's side. For Noad it was his second time collecting All-America honors for Kelly it was his first time.
