PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Randi Balg (Sound Beach, NY) tallied the gamewinner last Saturday as the Providence Field Hockey squad defeated ninth ranked Rutgers, 1-0. It was Balg's first goal of the season and 11th of her career. The win gave the Friars their second BIG EAST win of the season.
Sophomore Alison Carton (Milburn, N.J.) helped lead the women's tennis team to a 2-0 mark last week by posting two wins in the No. 1 singles spot for the Friars. Carton has recorded a 7-4 record this season.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... Did not compete. The team was ranked third in the most recent NCAA Cross Country Poll released on Sept. 28. The Friars return to action on Oct. 16 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
VOLLEYBALL (8-9, 0-2)... The Friars were 1-2 last week dropping two BIG EAST home games over the weekend. Providence defeated Northeastern, 3-2 to open the week and were led by sophomore Heidi Filippi with 19 kills. Freshman Sara Katinger recorded 17 kills with 29 digs. Against Georgetown, the Friars lost in five games and dropped a 16-14 fifth game to aid in the Hoya's victory. Senior Sherryl Jones recorded a team high 16 kills. On Sunday vs Villanova, the Friars won the first game, then fell three straight to the Wildcats for a 3-1 loss. Katinger recorded 15 kills while junior captain Colleen Lee recorded 51 assists.
FIELD HOCKEY (3-8, 2-2)... Providence split games this week falling #12 Boston College, 4-0 in Chestnut Hill then recording a 1-0 victory against #9 Rutgers. In the win, senior co-captain Randi Balg (Sound Beach, NY) recorded her first goal of the season as she tipped in a pass from junior Erica Hebert (Enfield, CT). Junior Andrea Weyl recorded 11 saves between the posts.
WOMEN'S SOCCER (2-8-0, 2-5-0)... The Friars split a pair of BIG EAST road games winning at West Virginia, 1-0 before losing a 3-2 decision at Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon. In the win at West Virginia, MICHELLE CARAVANA (Sr., Guilderland, N.Y.) scored early in the second half of a redirect kick by sophomore KIM CARR (Hanover, Mass.). SHAYNA ROSS (Jr., Whitman, Mass.) made nine saves in picking up her first shutout of the season. At Pittsburgh, PC got two goals from PATRICIA MOORE (Sr., Melville, N.Y.) but it wasn't enough as the Friars fell, 3-2. ROSS made eight saves in the loss. She currently ranks third in the country with 10.7 saves per game.
MEN'S TENNIS (0-0)... Did not compete. The Friars will return to action on Oct. 9-11 at the ECAC Championships.

MEN'S SOCCER (4-6, 2-3)... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-1 mark last week. On Sept. 29, PC earned its fourth consecutive win with 4-0 victory against Rhode Island at PC's Glay Field. PC's goals were scored by sophomore Andy Bussmann (Guidford, Conn.), junior Chris Holterhoff (Wayne, N.J.), sophomore Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.) and freshman Russell Corner (Abington, Mass.). Senior goalkeeper Dan Pires (Ludlow, Mass.) made two stops and earned his third shutout of the season. On Oct. 3, the Friars were defeated by West Virginia, 2-0, at Glay Field. Pires registered six stops in the loss.
MEN'S GOLF...The Providence College golf team finished seventh among 23 teams at the Toski Invitational in Amherst, Mass. The Friars shot a two-day total of 307-301-608 to finish 23 strokes behind Central Connecticut who set a tourney record with a 281-304-585.
PC was led by DEAN CASHMAN (So., Etna, N.H.) who tied for 13th with a 76-74-150 total, just six strokes over par on the 6,794 yard, par-72 course. Rounding out PC's scores were: RICHARD DICHARD (Sr., Nashua, N.H.) who shot a 79-74-153 to tie for 20th. Senior ROB BRENNAN (Springfield, Mass.) had a two-day total of 77-77-154 as did freshman ARA BOGHIGIAN (Cranston, R.I.) who shot a 78-76-154 to tie them for 30th spot overall. CHRIS HYNES (So., Warwick, R.I.) closed out PC's scorers with a 76-80-156 and finished tied for 41st..
WOMEN'S TENNIS (7-1)... The Friars posted a 2-0 record last week. On September 29, the squad defeated Tufts, 7-0, at Medford, Mass. Sophomore Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), freshman Brooke Rubin of Cranston, R.I. (No. 2 singles), junior Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 3 singles), freshman Lindsey Gillooly of Stoughton, Mass. (No. 4 singles), freshman Gina Vlasek of Atlanta, Ga. (No. 4 singles) and junior Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 6 singles) earned singles wins for the Friars. On Oct. 1, PC defeated Connecticut, 7-0, at PC. Carton, Rubin, LeMasters, Vlasek, Gillooly and Bergin each earned wins in singles play.
