PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) and sophomore Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.). Noad finished first and won the individual title in a time of 24:25 at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. He also led the squad to the team title. Jones scored four goals in two wins for the men's soccer team. He netted two goals in PC's 2-1 win over Harvard on Sept. 23 and scored two goals in the Friars' 2-0 win at Pittsburgh on Sept. 27.

Senior Sara Dupre (Kingston, Ontario) finished second in a time of 17:09 and helped the women's cross country team defeat 17 school's to win its third Roy Griak Invitational title on Sept. 26 in Minneapolis, Minn.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... The men's cross country team scored 106 points and defeated 20 schools to win its first Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 26.

Senior Ben Noad of Bristol, England finished first and won the individual title in a time of 24:25. Also scoring for the Friars were junior Keith Kelly of Drogheda, Ireland (fourth - 24:50), senior Rick Bush of Clifton Park, N.Y. (25th - 25:24), freshman Dermot Galvin of Kilrush, Ireland (33rd - 25:39) and senior Zach Ventress of Spokane, Wash. (43rd - 25:47). The Friars return to action on Oct. 16 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.

VOLLEYBALL (7-7)... . The Friars finished second at the Dartmouth Invitational last weekend in Hanover, NH. The Friars defeated Vermont, 3-0 by scores of 15-2, 15-4 and 15-11. On the second day, Providence defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-1 by scores of 15-10, 8-15, 15-5 and 15-4. In the championship match, host Dartmouth defeated Providence in five games by scores of 15-3, 7-15, 15-10, 6-15, 15-11.

In that match, sophomore Heidi Filippi (Wooster, OH) tallied a team high 19 kills on 38 attemps. Freshman Sarah Katinger recorded 16 kills while also collecting a team high 23 digs. Junior co-captain Colleen Lee recorded 51 assists. Lee and senior co-captain Sherryl Jones earned All-Tournament honors. The Friars host Northeastern on Tuesday, November 29.

FIELD HOCKEY (2-7)... Providence dropped two non-conferencegames this week. The Friars lost to host Holy Cross, 2-1 in overtime as junior keeper Andrea Weyl tallied 21 saves in the loss. Junior forward Erica Hebert tallied PC's lone goal. At No. 12 UNH, the Friars fought back against the Wildcats and tied the game midway through the second half off a goal from Hebert. UNH won the battle scoring with 20 minutes remaining for the edge. Hebert has scored in four straight games and has tallied the team's last six of eight goals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (1-7-0, 1-4-0)... The Friars lost their only game of the week, a 4-0 decision to Boston College. The Eagles scored twice in the first half and twice in the second while taking 26 shots in the game. Junior SHAYNA ROSS made six saves in the game. PC was 1-3 on its four game homestand. The Friars play at West Virginia on Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. and then at Pittsburgh on Sunday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m.

MEN'S TENNIS (0-0)... The Friars competed at the Yale Invitational on Sept. 25-27. PC's top player, senior Jamie Williams (Middlesex, England), posted a 1-2 mark in the "A" Singles Flight. The Friars' top double team was seniors Chris Wolken (Clayton, Mo.) and John Moog (Williamsville, N.Y.). Wolken and Moog registered a 2-1 mark for the weekend in the "A" Doubles Flight.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... The women's cross country team defeated 17 schools to win the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 26. The victory marked the third time the PC women's cross country team has won the title at the Roy Griak Invitational (1995, 1996 and 1998).

Providence was led by senior Sara Dupre of Kingston, Ontario, who finished second in a time of 17:09. Dupre finished one second behind individual champion Rasa Michiniovate of Minnesota (17:08). Senior Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine (14th - 17:50), freshman Heather Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. (17th - 17:58), sophomore Stephanie O'Reilly of Wicklow, Ireland (21st - 18:04) and junior Dana Ostrander of Ballston Lake, N.Y. (36th - 18:18) rounded out the scoring for the Friars.

The Friars return to action on Oct. 16 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.

MEN'S SOCCER (3-5, 2-2)... The Providence College Friars posted a 2-0 mark last week. PC's win on Sept. 27 over Pittsburgh gave the Friars their third consecutive win and second consecutive BIG EAST victory. It marked the first time the Friars have won consecutive BIG EAST games since 1984. On Sept. 23, the Friars earned their first win ever against Harvard as they defeated the Crimson, 2-1, at Glay Field. Sophomore forward Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass) recorded both goals for the Friars. It was his first career mulitple-goal game and first career game-winning goal. Senior goalkeeper Dan Pires (Ludlow, Mass.) made six stops. On Sept. 27, PC earned its third consecutive win with a 2-0 victory at Pittsburgh. Jones again led the offense for the Friars, recording his second straight two-goal game. Pires made eight stops and earned his sixth career shutout.

MEN'S GOLF... The Providence College golf team finished seventh of 16 teams at the Dartmouth Invitational with a 36-hole total of 283-294-577 to finish 24 strokes behind first place Rhode Island. RICHARD DICHARD (Sr., Nashua, NH) led the Friars with a two-day total of 66-76-142 good for a 14th place tie. The three-under par 66 was a career best for Dichard. ROB BRENNAN (Sr., Springfield, Mass.) tied for 21st with a 72-73-145. DEAN CASHMAN (So., Etna, N.H.) was 36th with a 73-74-147. Freshman ARA BOHIGIAN (Cranston, R.I.) playing in his first collegiate match tied for42nd with a 78-71-149.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (5-1)... The Friars posted a 3-0 record last week. On September 24, the squad defeated Central Connecticut, 4-3, at New Britain, Conn. Sophomore Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), freshman Brooke Rubin of Cranston, R.I. (No. 2 singles), freshman Lindsey Gillooly of Stoughton, Mass. (No. 5 singles) and junior Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 5 singles) earned singles wins for the Friars.

On Sept. 26, PC defeated Fairfield, 7-0, at Fairfield, Conn. Carton, Rubin, junior Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 3 singles), freshman Gina Vlasek of Atlanta, Ga. (No. 4 singles), Gillooly and Bergin all won in singles action. The following afternoon, the Friars finished the week with a 5-2 win against Fordham at PC. Rubin, LeMasters, Vlasek and Bergin each earned wins in singles play.
