FRIAR ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Junior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland) and senior Jamie Williams (Middlesex, England). Morrissey finished first in a time of 15:32 at the Fourth Annual Boston Cross Country Festival at Franklin Park on Sept. 19. Morrissey helped the Friars defeat three teams to win the overall title. Williams posted a 4-0 mark over the weekend to capture the "A" Singles Flight at the Swartmore Inv. in Swartmore, Pa.
Junior field hockey player Erica Hebert (Enfield, CT) helped the squad to a 2-0 week. Hebert recorded four of the team's five goals and assisted on the fifth.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... Did not compete. The Friars return to action on Sept. 26 at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
VOLLEYBALL (4-6)... The Friars finished second at the Manhattan Invite losing to eventual champion, Northeastern, 0-3. Providence defeated Manhattan, 15-7, 15-7 and 15-9; defeated UM-Eastern Shore, 15-5, 15-0 and 15-1; and Quinnipiac, 15-11, 15-1 and 15-6. Scores against Northeastern were 9-15, 3-15 and 10-15. In the first match of the tournament against Quinnipiac, the Friars were led by freshman Sarah Katinger (Stratford, CT) who recorded a team high 15 kills and eight digs. Katinger recorded only 1 error in 19 attempts for a .737 hitting percent. Against Manhattan, the Friars were led by senior captain Sherryl Jones (Mississauga, Ont) who tallied 10 kills. Against UM-Eastern Shore, Katinger recorded seven kills. In the lone loss of the Tournament, Jones tallied a game high 13 kills including her 1,000 career kill. The Friars host Holy Cross in the home opener on Tuesday, September 22.
FIELD HOCKEY (2-5)... The Friars won two games last week as they defeated cross-town rival Brown, 2-1 in overtime and BIG EAST rival Villanova, 4-3 in a stroke-off. Against Brown, junior Erica Hebert (Enfield, CT) recorded both goals for the Friars and sophomore goalie Heather Tattersall (Bethlehem, NH) recorded eight saves between the posts. In the home opener against Villanova, Hebert scored twice and sophomore Jamie Lerch (Medway, MA) also recorded a goal. Tattersall made eight stops and junior Andrea Weyl who played the final 40 minutes of the game, recorded two stops.
WOMEN'S SOCCER (1-6-0, 1-3-0)... The Friars were 1-2 on the week with losses to Boston University (8-3) and Syracuse (6-0) and a win against BIG EAST foe, St. John's, 2-1. That win snapped PC's 16-game winless (0-15-1) streak in BIG EAST games that went back to October 12, 1996. Versus Boston University, PATRICIA MOORE (Sr., Melville, N.Y.) scored twice and freshman CAITLYN WELSH (Winter Springs, Fla.) had three assists in the loss. In PC's win over St. John's, ALEXA RICARDO (Jr., Marshfield, Mass.) gave PC a 1-0 lead and MOORE got the game winner just three minutes later in the first half. SHAYNA ROSS (Jr., Whitman, Mass.) made 40 saves in the three games last week.
MEN'S TENNIS (0-0)... The Friars opened their season on Sept. 19-20 at the Swarthmore Invitational in Swarthmore, Pa. PC was led by senior Jamie Williams (Middlesex, England), freshman Steve Prisco (Dedham, Mass.) and the doubles team of seniors Chris Wolken (Clayton, Mo.) and John Moog (Williamsville, N.Y.). Williams recorded a 4-0 mark and captured the "A" Singles Flight. Prisco also posted a perfect mark of 4-0 while winning the "B" Singles Flight. Wolken and Moog registered a 3-0 mark for the weekend as they won the "C" Doubles Flight. The Friars return to action on Sept. 25-27 at the Yale Invitational.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY... The Providence College men's cross country squad defeated three teams to win the Fourth Annual Boston Cross Country Festival at Franklin Park on Saturday, Sept. 19. Providence College was led by junior Larry Morrissey of Waterford, Ireland who captured the individual title in a time of 15:32. Sophomore Ciaran Lynch of Limerick, Ireland (fourth - 15:39), junior Pat Conway of Manchester, N.H. (seventh - 15:59), freshman Tim Morris of Walpole, Mass. (13th - 16:07) and senior Carl Mauro of Hornell, N.Y. (16th - 16:22) also scored for the Friars. The Friars return to action Sept. 26 at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.
MEN'S SOCCER (1-5, 1-2)... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-1 mark last week. On Sept. 18, St. John's defeated the Friars, 8-0, in Jamaica, N.Y. Senior goalkeepers Dan Pires (Ludlow, Mass.) and Chris Tate (Weymouth, Mass.) combined to make four saves. On Sept. 20, PC earned its first win of the season with a 1-0 overtime victory at Syracuse. Sophomore back John Costigan (Dublin, Ireland) netted the game-winning goal in the 104th minute. The victory was the first win of the season for the Friars and it marked PC's first win against Syracuse since 1990. Pires registered a season-high 12 saves in goal while recording his fifth career shutout.
MEN'S GOLF... The Providence College golf team opened the fall schedule with a 17th place finish at the Yale Invitational. The Friars shot a 54-hole total of 945 to finish 74 strokes behind tourney champs Mississippi State who had an 871 for the 54 holes. PC was led by ROB BRENNAN (Sr., Springfield, Mass.) with an 83-76-74 - 233 which tied him for 45th. Teammate CHRIS HYNES (So., Warwick, R.I.) also tied for 45th with a 79-76-78-233. DEAN CASHMAN (So., Etna, N.H.) was 78th with a 78-81-80-239.
WOMEN'S TENNIS (2-1)... The Friars posted a 2-1 record last week. On September 16, Boston College defeated the Friars, 7-1, at Providence. Freshman Brooke Rubin of Cranston, R.I. (No. 3 singles) earned the lone win for the Friars. On Sept. 17, PC defeated Hartford, 9-0, at Hartford to earn its first win of the season. Sophomore Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), junior Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 2 singles), Rubin (No. 3 singles), freshman Gina Vlasek of Atlanta, Ga. (No. 4 singles), junior Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 5 singles) and freshman Katie Lafayette of Norwich, Conn. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins for the Friars. On Sept. 19, PC improved to 2-1 with a 7-0 win against New Hampshire at Providence. Carton, Rubin, LeMasters, Vlasek, Bergin and Lafayette won in singles action.
