WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - The women's cross country team won its season opener against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Friday, September 3 in Durham, N.H. The Friars (18 points) defeated UNH (38 points) by capturing five of the top eight positions. Junior Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.), a 1998 cross country All-America selection, won the race in a time of 19:00. She was followed by teammates sophomore Heather Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. (second - 19:00), senior Dana Ostrander of Ballston Lake, N.Y. (third - 19:00) and freshman Emily Tallen of Kingston, Ontario (fourth - 19:05) as PC swept the top four positions. Sophomore Kathryn Casserly of Galway, Ireland finished eighth (19:57) and rounded out the scoring for the Friars. The PC women's team will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the University of Rhode Island Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - The men's cross country team won its season opener against the University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Friday, September 3 in Durham, N.H. The men's team (18 points) defeated the Wildcats (33) by capturing five of the top nine spots. Competing without the services of 1998 All-American Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland), the Friars were paced by sophomore Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland), who finished first in a time of 24:54. Also scoring for the Friars were sophomore Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Ireland (second - 25:27), junior Ciaran Lynch of Limerick, Ireland (fifth - 25:45), freshman Tyler McCabe of Mystic, Conn. (sixth - 26:02) and freshman Tim Curran of Northboro, Mass. (ninth - 26:11). The men's team will race again on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Fordham Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y. at 11:00 a.m.
FIELD HOCKEY (0-3 Overall) - The Friars have lost the three opening games of the 1999 season. Providence hosted UNH in the season opener and gave up a 2-1 lead after the halfway point and fell 3-2. At the Husky Classic in Storrs, CT, the Friars fell to Kent, 3-2 after falling behind in the first half, 2-0. Senior Erica Hebert and junior Jamie Lerch each scored and assisted on the other's goal. In the second game of the Classic, the Friars fell to William & Mary, 3-0. In the three games, the Friars have had four different scorers. Senior Andrea Weyl recorded 15 saves against UNH, 7 saves versus Kent and 10 saves in the loss to W & M.
MEN'S SOCCER - The Providence College Friars posted a 1-0 mark last week. The Friars opened the season on Wednesday, September 1 with a 3-1 victory against Boston College in North Andover, Mass. The win marked the first time ever the Friars opened the season with a BIG EAST win and it also marked the first time the team opened with a victory since 1994. The Friars were led on offense by junior forward Kevin Jones (Westford, Mass.). Jones registered one goal and one assist. PC's other goals were scored by senior midfielder Michael Eisenhut (Hanover, Mass.) and sophomore back Kempes Corbally (Dublin, Ireland). For Corbally, who scored the Friars' second goal on a direct kick, it was his first collegiate tally. Sophomore goalkeeper Danny Glynn (Manchester, England) recorded seven saves in his first game as a Friar. Glynn transferred to Providence after a strong rookie year at Fairfield where he established a school record for shutouts (nine) and posted a 14-4-1 mark - PC's game scheduled for Saturday, September 4 against Sacred Heart at PC's Glay Field was cancelled. The game will not be rescheduled.
WOMEN'S SOCCER - In its only game last week, women's soccer team was defeated by the University of Rhode Island, 1-0, on Saturday, September 4 at PC's Glay Field. It marked Providence's first game of the season and first under new Head Coach Traci DiMillio Kerr. Friar senior goalkeeper Shayna Ross (Whitman, Mass) made six stops for the Friars. PC was unable to mount any offense against a steady Rhode Island defensive corps as the Rams took the decision.
VOLLEYBALL (1-2 Overall) - The Friars finished THIRD in the James Madison Volleyball Classic in Harrisburg, Virginia over the weekend. The Friars fell to host JMU, 3-0 then to Tennessee 3-0 before defeating Illinois-Chicago, 3-0. Junior Heidi Fillippi (Wooster, OH) was named to the All-Tournament team as she recorded 33 kills during the weekend which included a 3.67 kill per game tally and a solid .343 attack percent. She also recorded 12 digs and 15 assists. Super Sophs Sarah Katinger and Annie Cella led the Friars with 55 kills and 37 kills, respectively. Katinger tallied 6.11 kills per game and recorded a 21 kill effort versus Illinois-Chicago. Cella was outstanding on the defense end as well as she collected a team high 42 digs. Senior Colleen Lee recorded 124 assists throughout the three games.
