Providence College Athletes of the Week
Senior Marie McMahon (Ennistymon, Ireland) captured the 5,000 and 3,000 meter titles at the BIG EAST Championship on May 2-3. With her two wins, McMahon was named BIG EAST Outstanding Track Performer.
CHRIS CHANTRE (So., East Providence, R.I.) led the Providence College golf team to a second place finish at the Black Knight Invitational at West Point, N.Y. CHANTRE tied for second himself, two strokes behind the tourney champ with a two-day mark of 72-75-147. The scores were the lowest of his PC career and the finish was his best.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (12-11)... Providence recorded a 1-2 mark last week at the BIG EAST Championship and finished 10th out of 13 teams. On April 23, Rutgers defeated the Friars, 4-0. On April 24, PC earned its only win of the Tournament with a 4-3 victory against Pittsburgh. Freshman Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), sophomore Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 2 singles) and sophomore Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 5 singles) each earned a singles win. On April 25, the Friars were defeated by St. John's, 4-2.
MEN'S TENNIS (18-6)... The Friars recorded a 2-1 mark last week at the BIG EAST Championship and finished third of 11 teams. On April 24, PC defeated St. John's, 4-0. The following afternoon the Friars were defeated by eventual BIG EAST Champion Miami, 4-0. On April 26, PC concluded the Tournament by defeating West Virginia, 4-2. In the Friars win against West Virginia, senior Dylan Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 1 singles), senior Felipe Vivar of Los Cebios, Ecuador and freshman Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins.
WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's outdoor track team competed at the BIG EAST Championship on May 2-3 and finished 10th of 13 teams. Senior Marie McMahon of Ennistymon, Ireland led the Friars by capturing the 5,000 and 3,000 meter titles. McMahon was named BIG EAST Outstanding Track Performer. Also in the 5,000 meters, Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario finished second (16:40.40). In the 10,000, Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine placed fourth (35:23.84). Freshman Rachel Hixson of Media, Pa. ran a strong race in the 3,000 meters, finishing fourth in a time of 9:33.98.
SOFTBALL (17-25-2, 4-12-1)... The Friars concluded their season with a 17-25-2 overall mark and a 4-12-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Sophomore Jamie Servidone finished the season with a team high .289 average at the plate. Servidone missed more than half the games because of mononucleosis. Junior Maureen Moore started all 44 games and tallied a .285 average while freshman Kerri Jacklets recorded a .278 mark. The Friars lose two seniors - and only one that actually played this season. Captain Erin Quaglia was sidelined the entire season with a torn ACL. Senior Lauren Smith tallied a 4-5 mark on the mound with a 5.25 earned run average.
LACROSSE (5-9, 3-4)... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-0 mark last week. On April 29, the Friars defeated Vermont, 13-6, at Glay Field in the final game of the season. Junior Matt Pymm (Port Washington, N.Y.) led the offense with five goals and one assist. With his six points, Pymm established the Providence single-season scoring mark. Junior Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) registered 13 saves in net.
BASEBALL (29-20-1, 14-8-1)... PC was 2-4 on the week, but the two wins came on the weekend against St. John's and clinched PC a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars suffered non-league losses to Central Connecticut (5-3), Northeastern (7-6) and Harvard (12-7). At St. John's, the losing streak went to four in a row as PC let the Red Storm rally from a 5-1 deficit to score five in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 win. Game Two of the twinbill belonged to ROB CORRARO (Jr., Madison, Conn.) who pitched his third complete game of the year in a 6-3 win. CORRARO scattered 12 hits, walked one and struck out two but kept St. John's off the scoreboard. Freshman KEITH REED (So., Auburn, Mass.) broke out of an rbi-drought with a pair of rbi's. ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) had a pair of hits for PC as did REED. On Sunday, PC pitching was again the story. Senior MARC DesROCHES (Cambridge, Mass.) pitched a six-hit complete game as the Friars scored three in the ninth to break a 2-2 for the 5-2 win. DesROCHES struck out eight to raise his season total to 68 which is second best all-time at PC. CIMINIELLO had two more hits and two rbi's in the win. Earlier in the week, SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Walpole, Mass.) became PC's single season rbi leader when he drove in runs 63 and 64 to break the previous mark of 62. PC goes to the BIG EAST Tournament in Norwich, Connecticut from May 13-16.
MEN'S GOLF... The Golf team closed out its season with its best performance of the season, a second place finish at the Black Knight Invitational at Army. The Friars shot a two-day total of (303-301-604) to finish just four strokes behind the tourney host - Army who shot a (305-295-600) for the 36-hole tourney. Leading the way for Providence was CHRIS CHANTRE (So., East Providence, R.I.) who tied for second with a 72-75-147, which is the best finish of his career. ROB BRENNAN (Jr., Springfield, Mass.) and JOHN LOMBARDI (Sr., West Warwick, R.I.) tied for ninth as each shot a 151. RICH DICHARD (Jr., Nashua, N.H.) tied for 18th with a 79-77-156 and BEN BRIDGEO (Fr., Southbridge, Mass.) was 20th with a 78-79-157. For the spring, BRENNAN finished with a 78.5 average, CHANTRE was second with a 79.3, LOMBARDI third with a 79.6 and BRIDGEO was fourth with a 79.9 average for the spring season.
MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's outdoor track competed at the BIG EAST Championship on May 2-3 and finished 13th. Junior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) was the Friars' top runner, placing second in the 5,000 meters (14:23.96). Junior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also ran a strong race for the Friars as he finished third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:07.89).
