Providence College Athletes Of The Week
Senior Marie McMahon (Ennistymon, Ireland) captured the 5,000 meters (15:51.41) in the College Championship Division at the the Penn Relays on April 23. For McMahon it marked the second time she won the 5,000 title at the Penn Relays.

Men's Tennis Team recorded a 2-1 mark last week at the BIG EAST Championship and finished third of 11 teams.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's outdoor track team competed at the Penn Relays on April 23-24. Senior Marie McMahon of Ennistymon, Ireland led the Friars by capturing the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:51.41. Also in the 5,000 meters, Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario finished fifth (16:34.35) and Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine placed ninth (16:49.25). Freshman Stephanie O'Reilly of Wicklow, Ireland placed fourth in the College Division 3,000 meters. In the College Championship Division 3,000 meters, Dana Ostrander of Ballston Lake, N.Y. finished 11th in a time of 9:44.36.

SOFTBALL (17-25-2, 4-12-1)... The Friars were 0-3 over the weekend losing three straight games to the University of Connecticut. Providence lost by scores of 8-2, 9-1 and 7-3. In the first game in Storrs, CT, freshman Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, NY) led the Friar offense with three hits while knocking in two runs. Freshman Gwyn Mangini (Gansevoort, NY) chipped in with two hits. The Providence bats defeated the Huskies, 9-7 althouth the Friars were plagued with five errors in the field. In the nightcap on Saturday, the Friars managed only three hits and the game was called after five innings with the score, 9-1. On Sunday, sophomore hurler Heather Nathan (S. Hempstead, NY) allowed 15 hits by the Huskies as they outscored PC, 7-3 in the last conference game of the season. For the Friars, junior Maureen Moore (Bloomfield, NJ) was 2-4 at the plate.

The Friars, 17-25-2, will wrap up the season on Tuesday as they host Hartford in the season finale. Sophomore Jamie Servidone (Rensselaer, NY), who has been sidelined with mono for the past two weeks, still leads the offensive attack batting .289 at the plate. Moore has a team high 39 hits while Jacklets has 35 hits and a team high six homers.

MEN'S TENNIS (18-6)... The Friars recorded a 2-1 mark last week at the BIG EAST Championship and finished third of 11 teams. On April 24, PC defeated St. John's, 4-0. The following afternoon the Friars were defeated by eventual BIG EAST Champion Miami, 4-0. On April 26, PC concluded the Tournament by defeating West Virginia, 4-2. In the Friars win against West Virginia, senior Dylan Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 1 singles), senior Felipe Vivar of Los Cebios, Ecuador and freshman Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins.

LACROSSE (4-9, 3-4)... The Providence College Friars posted a 0-2 mark last week. On April 22, Holy Cross defeated the Friars, 15-14, in overtime at Glay Field. Sophomore Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) led the Friar offense with five goals. Junior Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) registered 18 saves in net. On April 25, the Friars were defeated by Hartford, 16-9, at Hartford, Conn. Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) tallied three goals for the Friars. Chambers made 20 saves in net.

BASEBALL (27-16-1, 12-7-1)...The Friars were 1-3 on the week and lost a doubleheader with Brown to the rain. On Wednesday, April 22, the Friars' MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) and Boston College's Steve Langone hooked up in a pitcher's dual that Boston College won, 3-1. The Eagles their runs in the second and third and the Friars could get just one unearned run across in the fourth. Langone scattered nine hits and struck out eight in the win. The weekend brought Rutgers in an important three-game series. The Scarlet Knights were second in the league. Providence needed any combination of PC wins or UConn losses equalling three to clinch a playoff spot. In game one, Rutgers scored in every inning except the fourth on the way to a 10-5 win.

RUDY MAURITZ (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.), BRYAN TAMUL (Gr., Pawtucket, R.I.) and PAT CAREY (Sr., Stony Point, N.Y.) all hit homers in the loss. In game two, the Friars led 10-7 after six innings, but could not hold the lead. Rutgers got two in the seventh and six in the eighth on the way to a 17-13 win. TAMUL had four hits and four rbi's in the game and Carey delivered three hits and four runs batted in. On Sunday, DesROCHES went the distance, striking out eight for his seventh win of the year. ANGELO |CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) and SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Walpole, Mass.) drove in two runs each in the win. The Friars' "magic" number is one.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (12-11)... Providence recorded a 1-2 mark last week at the BIG EAST Championship and finished 10th out of 13 teams. On April 23, Rutgers defeated the Friars, 4-0. On April 24, PC earned its only win of the Tournament with a 4-3 victory against Pittsburgh. Freshman Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), sophomore Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 2 singles) and sophomore Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 5 singles) each earned a singles win. On April 25, the Friars were defeated by St. John's, 4-2.

MEN'S GOLF...Rain wreaked havoc on the New England Division I Championships which were held at the Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett, Rhode Island. After Thurdsay's opening round was washed out, the tournament became a one day event. Providence (325) finished eighth of 16 teams, 18 strokes behind tournament champ, URI (307). Army was second at 313, UConn third at 317, Yale fourth at 318 and Hartford rounded out the top five with a 321. PC was led by JOHN LOMBARDI (Sr., Warwick, R.I.) who shot an 80 and finished tied for 17th. ROB BRENNAN (Jr., Springfield, Mass.) tied for 22nd with an 81; BEN BRIDGEO (Fr., Southbridge, Mass.) tied along with DEAN CASHMAN (Fr., Etna,, N.H.) with 82's and RICH DICHARD (Sr., Nashua, N.H.) closed out the Friars' scoring with and 82. PC closes out the season at the Black Knight Invitational at Army on May 2nd and 3rd.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's outdoor track competed at the Penn Relays on April 23-24. Junior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) placed sixth in the 5,000 meters (14:08.84) and Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) finished 11th (9:44.36). Also, the Providence Distance Medley Relay team of junior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.), junior Chris Lambton (South Dennis, Mass.), senior Paul McNamara (Galway, Ireland) and junior Carl Mauro (Hornell, N.Y.) finished fifth in a time of 10:00.28.
