PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Junior JAMIE WILLIAMS (Middlesex, England) helped the Friar tennis team post a 4-0 mark last week. Williams competed in the No. 2 singles spot and recorded a 4-0 record.

MARC DesROCHES (Jr., Cambridge, Mass.) and ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) were named BIG EAST Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively. DesROCHES pitched a seven-inning, one-hit shutout against Georgetown in which he faced the minimun of 21 batters. CIMINIELLO was 14-25 (.560) with eight runs scored, a double, four homers and 16 rbi's as the Friars were 4-2 on the week, 4-0 in BIG EAST play.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's outdoor track team competed at the University of Connecticut Spring Classic on April 18. Senior Marie McMahon of Ennistymon, Ireland (1,500 meters, 4:28.36) and freshman Stephanie O'Reilly of Wicklow, Ireland (3,000 meters, 9:58.04) each earned a first-place finish. Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario (1,500 meters, 4:33.93) and Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine (3,000 meters, 9:59.04) also ran strong races, finishing second in their respective events.

SOFTBALL (17-22-2, 4-9-1)... The Friars were 5-5 this week overall and 3-3 in the BIG EAST as they played all their games on the road. The Friars made up two games with St. John's last Monday and split with the Red Storm, 0-4 and 6-4. PC then split with Holy Cross - losing the first game, 3-2 in 10 innings. In the nightcap, PC scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the game, 3-0. Providence split with Fairfield, losing 2-1 as the Stags scored in the bottom of the seventh - then won 6-1 in the nightcap. In the second game, freshman Val Bono (Woburn, MA) hit a two-run homer and freshman Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, NY) was 3-4 at the plate. In BIG EAST games over the weekend, Providence swept Seton Hall by scores of 2-1 and 4-0. Bono was 3-7 in the doubleheader and added another homer. The Friars then dropped two games to Rutgers losing 6-0 then 10-0. Junior Kristi Lyman (N. Andover, MA) was 4-5 in the series including a 3-3 performance in the first game. Jacklets leads the team in BIG EAST games batting .310 at the plate with 13 hits including four homeruns. Bono is second in BIG EAST hitting with a .273 average for the Friars.

MEN'S TENNIS (16-5)... The Friars recorded a 4-0 mark last week. On April 15, PC defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 6-1, at PC. The following afternoon the Friars earned a 7-0 win against Boston College at PC. On April 18, PC defeated West Virginia, 5-2, at Washington, D.C. The Friars concluded their impressive week with a 5-1 win against Georgetown at Washington, D.C. Senior Felipe Vivar of Los Cebios, Ecuador (No. 3 singles), junior Jamie Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 2 singles) and senior Kevin Ryan of Pittsford, N.Y. (No. 5 and 6 singles) all posted a 4-0 mark last week.

LACROSSE (4-7, 3-4)... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-2 mark last week. On April 15, Boston College defeated the Friars, 12-10, at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Junior Matt Pymm led the Friar offense with four goals. Junior Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) registered 14 saves in net. On April 18, the Friars earned a 20-7 victory against Manhattan College at Glay Field. Sophomore Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) and freshman Jeff Merklinger (South Orange, N.J.) each tallied four goals for the Friars. Chambers and sophomore Brian McCarthy (Townsend, Mass.) combined made seven saves in net. The following afternoon, Dartmouth defeated PC, 15-12, at Glay Field. Pymm was the Friars' top scorer with three goals, Chambers posted 18 stops in net.

BASEBALL (26-13-1, 11-4-1)...The Friars were 4-2 on the week, including 4-0 in BIG EAST action. Providence lost non-league games at Rhode Island (23-5) and at Fairfield (12-10) on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. In between, the Friars travelled to Boston College where they won 8-4. Junior JOSH BURNHAM (Tolland, Conn.) pitched into the eighth and MIKE GALLIGAN (Jr., Plainville, Mass.) got the final six outs to record his first save of the season. ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) led the way with three rbi's...On Saturday, MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) pitched a seven-inning, one-hit shutout against Georgetown. DesROCHES walked one and struck out eight while facing the minimum of 21 batters in the 7-0 win. CIMINIELLO added added a three-run homer as he and DesROCHES were named BIG EAST Player and Pitcher of the week. Game Two of Sunday's twinbill was another pitching gem. ROB CORRARO (Madison, Conn.) went eight strong innings before turning things over to GALLIGAN who struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the 2-1 PC win. Game Three on Sunday saw CIMINIELLO drive in four more runs and junior JOSH BURNHAM picked up his second win of the week as PC won 13-6.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (11-9)... Providence recorded a 1-2 mark last week. On April 14, PC defeated Connecticut, 6-1, at Storrs, Conn. Freshman Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles), sophomore Jessie LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 2 singles), sophomore Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 4 singles) and junior Katie Burke of Madison, Conn. (No. 5 singles) all earned singles wins for the Friars. On April 18, the Georgetown defeated the Friars, 7-0, at Washington, D.C. The following afternoon, West Virginia earned a 6-0 win against PC at Washington, D.C.

MEN'S GOLF...The golf team finished fourth at the BIG Five Tournament at Metacomet Country Club on Tuesday, April 14 and then finished 4th among 13 teams at the Rhode Island Invitational in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. At the BIG Five, ROB BRENNAN (Jr., Springfield, Mass.) led the way with a fifth place finish, five-over-par 75. The Friars shot a 314 for the day, 19 strokes behind Central Connecticut's 295. At the URI Invitational, three Friar golfers finished in the top 20 as PC was fourth with a two-day total of 631. BEN BRIDGEO (Fr., Southbridge, Mass.) tied for eight (76-77-153), BRENNAN was 13th (77-79-156) and RICHARD DICHARD (Jr., Nashua, N.H.) tied for 16th (78-79-157).

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's outdoor track competed at the University of Connecticut Spring Classic on April 18. Junior Zack Ventress (Spokane, Wash.) and junior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.) were the Friars' top finishers. Ventress won the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:39.19 and Bush captured the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:09.46. Junior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) placed fifth in the 1,500 meters (3:54.89).
