WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's outdoor track team did not compete. The team will return to action on April 18 at the University of Connecticut.

SOFTBALL (13-18-2)... The Friars 1-2 this week overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST. The Friars split games with Brown, losing the first game 4-2 and winning the nightcap 1-0. The Friars recorded six hits in the first game, including two by junior Kristi Lyman (North Andover, MA). Freshman Robyn West (Gansevoort, NY) recorded the loss on the mound giving up three earned runs while striking out seven. In the second game, freshman Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, NY) gave the Friars the win as she cranked a homer in the bottom of the sixth to prove the difference. Sophomore pitcher Heather Nathan (S. Heampstead, NY) allowed only two hits in seven innings. Against St. John's, the Friars managed only two hits as they loss, 9-1 in only five innings. Junior Maureen Moore leads the team batting .309 at the plate. On the mound, West has eight wins and a 2.77 earned run average.

MEN'S TENNIS (11-5)... The Friars recorded a 1-1 mark last week. On April 7, PC defeated Rhode Island, 6-1, at Kingston, R.I. Senior Dylan Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 2 singles), freshman Paco Fabian of Norwalk, Conn. (No. 3 singles), freshman Chris Riccobono of Franklin Lakes, N.J. (No. 4 singles), freshman Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I. (No. 5 singles) and junior John Moog of Williamsville, N.Y. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins. The following afternoon, Yale earned a 5-2 victory against the Friars. Dylan Williams and senior Felipe Vivar (Los Cebios, Ecuador) each won their singles matches.

LACROSSE (3-5, 2-4)... The Providence College Friars posted a 0-1 mark last week. On April 9, Fairfield defeated the Friars, 18-9, at Fairfield, Conn. Freshman Jeff Merklinger (South Orange, N.J.), sophomore Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.), freshman Jack Cullinane (Southport, Conn.) and junior Craig Schwalb (Bayville, N.Y.) each tallied two goals for the Friar offense. Junior Rob Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) posted 18 saves in net.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's outdoor track competed at UMass-Amherst against UMass, Holy Cross and Iona on April 11. Junior Zack Ventress (Spokane, Wash.) was the Friars' top finisher, winning the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:44.09. Sophomore Frank Mignano (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) and junior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also finished strong for PC. Mignano place third (1:56.06) in the 800 meters and Bush was third in the 1,500 meters (3:54.01).

MEN'S GOLF...The golf team had a strong week finishing 4th among 14 teams at the Hofstra Invitational on Monday. The Friars then finished second in the Rhode Island Division I Championship, just one stroke behind URI's winning team. At Hofstra, the Friars were second after the first day, but fell to fourth. JOHN LOMBARDI (Sr., Warwick, R.I.) led the Friars with a two-day mark of 74-79-153, good for ninth overall. ROB BRENNAN (Jr., Springfield, Mass.) and BEN BRIDGEO (Fr., Southbridge, Mass.) finished tied for 14th with two-day totals of 155. CHRIS CHANTRE (So., East Providence, RI) finished third at the RI Championships with a 78.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (10-7)... In its only match last week, the women's tennis team defeated Rhode Island, 6-1, on April 8 at Providence. Sophomore Jessie LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 2 singles), senior Monica Martinez of Guayaquil, Ecuador (No. 3 singles), senior Christina Martin of Delray Beach, Fla. (No. 4 singles), sophomore Kim Bergin of Winchester, Mass. (No. 5 singles) and junior Katie Burke of Madison, Conn. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins for the Friars.

BASEBALL (22-11-1, 7-4-1)...The Friars kept pace in the BIG EAST standings with a pair of wins at Pittsburgh followed by two losses at West Virginia. On Thursday at Pitt, PC won the first game, 7-6, behind the strong 3.1 innings of relief turned in by MIKE GALLIGAN (Jr., Plainville, Mass.). He took over with the score, 7-6 and struck out three and walked on while giving up just one hit. MIKE O'KEEFE (Fr., Hamden, Conn.) and PAT CAREY (Sr., Stony Point, N.Y.) each drove in two runs. Game 2 saw the Friars get a complete game from ROB CORRARO (Jr., Madison, Conn.).

SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Walpole, Mass.) and CAREY each had three-run homers in the 10-3 win. At West Virginia, PC had one bad inning in each game and came out on the short end, 12-5 and 7-4. Game one saw PClead 5-4 after five innings before WVU exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 12-5 win. Game Two saw WVU score five runs in the first inning in the 7-4 win. PC tried to comeback but just couldn't get any closer than the final score. Designated hitter JEREMY SWEET (So., East Freetown, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs in the game.
