PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Sarah Dupre (Sr., Kingston, Ontario)... represented Canada in the World Cross Country Championship in Belfast, Northern Ireland on March 27-28. Dupre placed 71st in the 4K race in a time of 17:10.

Neal McCarthy (Fr., Warwick, R.I.)...The Friars' right fielder was 7-for-22 (.387) on the week including 5-for-15 (.333) in four BIG EAST games. McCarthy had three doubles and three home runs with seven rbi's on the week. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against West Virginia, McCarthy had a solo homer and a grand slam for five rbi's. He added his third homer of the weekend in the second game against West Virginia. For the year, he is hitting .386 with seven homers and 24 rbi's in 22 games.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The women's track team competed at the Raleigh Relays on March 26-27 at Raleigh, N.C. Freshman Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) was the top runner for the Friars, placing second in the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:47.23 and qualifying for the ECAC Championship. Senior Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine finished eighth in the 10,000 meters in a time of 35:49.33 to qualify for the ECAC Championship.

LACROSSE (0-6, 0-3)... In its only game last week, the lacrosse team was defeated by St. Joseph's, 14-9, on March 28 at PC's Glay Field. Junior Rory Wentworth (Bloomfield, Conn.) led PC's offense with three goals. Senior Matt Pymm (Port Washington, N.Y.), freshman Chris Houston (Garden City, N.J.) and junior Dan Moran (Skaneateles, N.Y.) each notched two goals for the Friars. Junior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) also added one goal. Junior Brian McCarthy (Townsend, Mass.) and senior Robb Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) combined to make 20 saves.

SOFTBALL (6-15)...The Friars 3-3 last week improving their overall record to 6-15 overall. The Friars swept Quinnipiac last Wedensday by scores of 3-2 and 2-1 then split with Hartford winning the first contest, 2-0 then falling to the Hawks, 0-2. On Sunday, the Friars travelled to Yale and lost both games by scores of 2-8 and 3-8. Junior Jami Servidone leads the squad at the plate batting .397 overall. Last week, the first baseman was 7-17 (.411) at the plate which included two doubles and a triple. She has started and played in all 21 games and has a team high .603 slugging percent. The Friars take on Boston University at home on Tuesday then open BIG EAST action versus Connecticut on Saturday, April 3 at noon.

BASEBALL (22-7/1-3)...The Friars were 3-4 on the week, but extended their winning streak to a school record 15 games in an 8-4 win over Rhode Island on March 24th. The Friars had opened the week with a 13-6 win at Massachusetts on Tuesday, March 23rd. The streak came to an end however on Friday, March 26th when the University of Hartford rallied with eight runs in the ninth to pull out an 18-14 win over the Friars. A four-game BIG EAST weekend followed with PC going 1-3 in games against West Virginia and Pittsburgh. Versus West Virginia, the Friars fell behind 8-0 in the first inning on the way to the 12-7 loss. NEAL McCARTHY (Fr., Warwick, R.I.) led the Friars with two homers and five rbi's in the game.

The second game versus West Virginia saw ROB CORRARO (Sr., Madison, Conn.) go the distance. but pick up his first loss of the season to go to 5-1. KEITH REED (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) led PC's hitters with a 4-for-5 game. The first game of the Pittsburgh series featured outstanding pitching from MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.). The big righthander pitched his third complete game of the season giving up just four hits, three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out five. PC rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth on rbi's by PAUL COSTELLO (Sr., Milton, Mass.), COLEY O'DONNELL (Jr., Sudbury, Mass.) and a two-run double by DAN CONWAY (So., Delmar, N.Y.). In the nightcap, the Friars saw Pittsburgh pound out 20 hits off of four pitchers in an 18-4 win. ANDY SCOTT (So., Milltown, N.J.) took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season. The Friars travel to Holy Cross on Monday, host C.W. Post on Tuesday, then travel to Notre Dame for a BIG EAST doubleheader on Thursday.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The men's track team competed at the Raleigh Relays on March 26-27 at Raleigh, N.C. Junior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) and senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) posted strong performances for the Friars. Kelly was fifth in the 5,000 (14:06.45) and Noad was eighth in the 5,000 (14:08.78). Both runners qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championship. PC's 4 x 800 meter relay team of junior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland), senior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.), freshman Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) and junior Frank Mignano (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) finished eighth (7:47.18) and qualified for the IC4A Championship.

GOLF (1-1)... The Friars next play on Friday, April 9th at the Yale Invitational.
