PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Friars' catcher SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Canton, Mass.) helped lead the Friars to a weekend sweep of Villanova. Versus the Wildcats, Friedholm had back-to-back three hit, three rbi games in 11-3 and 23-3 wins. For the week, FRIEDHOLM was 7-20 (.350) with seven runs scored, three doubles, a homer and eight rbi's. For the year he is hitting .424 with six homers and 34 rbi's.
GLADYS GANIEL (Jr., Harrington, Maine) was PC's top finisher at the Raleigh Relays, placing third in the 10,000 meters (35:17.12) and qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Ganiel, a Political Science major with a 3.97 GPA, earned GTE Academic All-America District I At-Large honors on Monday, March 30.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK ... The Providence College women's outdoor track team competed at the Raleigh Relays on March 27-28. Junior Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) was the team's top finisher. Ganiel placed third in the 10,000 meters (35:17.12) and qualified for the NCAA Championship. PC's 4 x 1,500 meter relay team of senior Marie McMahon (Ennistymon, Ireland), freshman Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.), freshman Stephanie O'Reilly (Wicklow, Ireland) and sophomore Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) placed third in a time of 18:27.96.
SOFTBALL (9-10)... The Friars were 2-2 this week giving them a 9-10 overall record. PC travelled to Boston University and dropped both games to the Terriers - 1-0 and 8-0. Freshman Robyn West (Gansevoort, NY) dropped the 1-0 contest as she allowed only four hits in the eight innings. PC hosted Yale over the weekend and won both by scores of 6-0 and 8-2. West was the winning pitcher in the shutout game. Junior Maureen Moore (Bloomfield, NJ) was 2-3 in the first game including a triple and followed that with a 2-4 performance in the nightcap. The Friars play nine games this week including the BIG EAST opener against Boston College. The Friars host the Eagles Tuesday for a double header at 3 pm and Wednesday for a single game beginning at 4 pm.
MEN'S TENNIS (8-3)... The Friars posted a 2-0 mark last week with wins against St. John's and Temple. On March 28, PC defeated St. John's, 6-1, at Providence. Junior Jamie Williams of Middlesex, England (No. 2 singles), senior Felipe Vivar of Los Cebios, Ecuador (No. 3 singles), freshman Paco Fabian of Norwalk, Conn. (No. 4 singles), freshman Chris Riccobono of Franklin Lakes, N.J. (No. 5 singles) and senior Kevin Ryan of Pittsford, N.Y. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins. On March 29, the Friars earned a 4-3 win against Temple in Philadelphia, Pa. Jamie Williams, Vivar and Ryan each recorded singles wins for the Friars.
LACROSSE (2-4, 1-3)... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-1 mark last week. On March 28, PC defeated Marist College, 12-6, at Glay Field. Sophomore Ken Leahy of Cohasset, Mass. (three goals), junior Bill Pymm of Port Washington, N.Y. (two goals) and sophomore Dan Moran of Skaneateles, N.Y. (two goals) led the Friar offense, Junior goaltender Rob Chambers of Bryn Mawr, Pa. made 22 saves in the win. On March 29, Siena College defeated the Friars, 11-10, at Glay Field. Pymm tallied four goals and Leahy added three for the Friars. Sophomore Brian McCarthy of Townsend, Mass. and Chambers combined to register 21 saves in net.
MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's outdoor track team competed at the Raleigh Relays on March 27-28. Junior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) was the Friars' top finisher, placing 12th in the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:19.67. PC's 4 x 1,500 meter relay team of senior Paul McNamara (Galway, Ireland), junior Carl Mauro (Hornell, N.Y.), junior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and junior Brendan Cashman (Westwood, Mass.) placed eighth (15:49.37).
WOMEN'S TENNIS (9-7)... The Friars recorded a 0-3 mark last week. On March 26, Boston University defeated the Friars, 8-1, at Providence. Freshman Alison Carton of Milburn, N.J. (No. 1 singles) recorded the lone singles win. The following day, St. John's earned a 5-2 victory against the Friars at PC. Sophomore Jesse LeMasters of Cincinnati, Ohio (No. 2 singles) registered a singles win. On March 29, Temple defeated the Friars, 4-3, at Philadelphia, Pa. Sophomore Kim Bergin (Winchester, Mass.) recorded a singles win.
BASEBALL (16-7, 3-1)... The Friars were 3-2 on the week including a three-game sweep of BIG EAST foe, Villanova. The week started on Monday as the Friars battled the snow and cold in a 6-1 loss to UConn. The Huskies' Josh Santos pitched a three-hitter while striking out 15 and walking two. KEITH REED (So., Auburn, Mass.) had his tenth homer of the season. On Tuesday, the University of Massachusetts handed the Friars a 14-8 loss at Hendricken Field. ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) led the Friars with a 3-5 game including a homer and three rbi's. ROB CORRARO (Jr., Madison, Conn.) took the loss. On Saturday at Villanova, the Friars swept two from the Wildcats. MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) went the distance giving up one earned run while striking out nine over seven innings. A five-run seventh broke open a close game for PC. Game Two saw the Friars get six in the seventh to break open a 3-3 tie on the way to an 11-3 victory. SCOTT FRIEDHOLM (Sr., Canton, Mass.) led the Friars with three hits, including two doubles and three rbi's. CIMINIELLO and PAT CAREY (Sr., Stony Point, N.Y.) each drove in a pair of runs in the win. The Friars closed out the three-game series with an impressive show of offense. CORRARO pitched seven strong innings to pick up his second win of the year as PC roughed up seven Villanova pitchers in a 23-3 victory. PAUL COSTELLO (Jr., Milton, Mass.) was 4-6 with a homer and four rbi's. RUDY MAURITZ (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) was 2-2 with a double, a homer and three rbi's and CIMINIELLO and FRIEDHOLM each had three hits and three rbi's in the win. The Friars play five games at home this week. On Tuedsay, Holy Cross visits Hendricken Field. Wednesday is a BIG EAST contest with Boston College and the weekend brings BIG EAST foe, Seton Hall to PC for three games, two on Saturday and one on Sunday.
