Sport-by-Sport Updates

BASEBALL (13-6, 0-1)... The Friars battled mother nature much of the week as two games with Rhode Island were rained out , followed by the snow out of a doubleheader with Notre Dame on Saturday. Due to Hendricken Field's incredible ability to handle water, the Friars' BIG EAST contest with Connecticut was moved to Providence so that at least one game was played on Monday.

The Friars were 1-1 in games played as they won a 4-2 decision against Bryant College on March 17th. The Friars then fell to Connecticut, 6-1, on Monday to close out the week.

Against Bryant, the Friars scored four runs in the fourth inning capped by KEITH REED's (So., Auburn, Mass.) ninth home run, a two-run shot that made the score, 4-0. Freshman lefthander, ANDY SCOTT pitched eight innings to get the win. He struck out six and walked three while surrendering just five hits. ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Jr., St. James, N.Y.) picked up his first save of the year pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Connecticut game featured a tremendous pitching performance by UConn's Josh Santos who gave up three hits, while striking out 15 and walking two in the 6-1 win. PC's lone run came off the bat of hot hitting KEITH REED who hit his tenth homer of the season in the sixth. MARC DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) took the loss for the Friars.

PC plays Massachusetts on Tuesday and then travels to Villanova for a three-game weekend series with the Wildcats.

SOFTBALL (7-8)... The Providence Friars were 3-2 over the weekend at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Friars made the Final Eight in the 40-team tournament and advanced to the Championship round where they lost to Virginia, 4-2. Scores throughout the weekend were: Providence 2, Samford 1; Providence 2, Coastal Carolina 1; Providence 3, Virginia Tech 1; Northeast Louisiana 4, Providence 3 and Virginia 4, Providence 2. The Friars were led by freshman pitcher Robyn West who hurled three games and won two. Sophomore Heather Nathan, who has been out with a knee injury to start the season, recorded a 1-1 record on the mound with a defeat of Virginia Tech.

MEN'S TENNIS (6-3)... The team's only match last week against Seton Hall was cancelled because of inclement weather. The Friars will return to action on March 28 against St. John's.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (9-4)... The Friars did not compete last week. The team will return to action on March 26 against Boston University.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's outdoor track team will open its season on March 27-28 at the Raleigh Relays.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's outdoor track team will open its season on March 27-28 at the Raleigh Relays.

LACROSSE (1-3, 0-2)... The Providence College Friars posted a 0-2 mark last week. On March 18, PC was defeated by St. Joseph's University, 21-13 at Philadelphia, Pa. Sophomore Ken Leahy of Cohasset, Mass. (four goals), freshman Jeff Merklinger of South Orange, N.J. (three goals) and senior Jason Hanrahan of Hingham, Mass. (three goals) all led the Friar offense. Sophomore Brian McCarthy of Townsend, Mass. and junior Rob Chambers of Bryn Mawr, Pa. combined to register 20 saves in net.
