Senior Sarah Dupre (Kingston, Ontario)... won the 3,000 meters at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship in a time of 9:23.31 on Feb. 21 at Syracuse, N.Y. The win gave Dupre her first BIG EAST track title.
Jamel Thomas (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.)...for the fourth time this season, Thomas has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week. The Friars' All-America and All-BIG EAST candidate scored a career-high 38 points, including 12 of 14 in overtime, in PC's 90-84 overtime win at Villanova. Earlier in the week he had 21 in a 104-70 loss at St. John's.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... PC competed at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship on Feb. 20-21 and finished 11th of 13 teams with 23 points. Senior Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario won the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:23.31. For Dupre it was her first BIG EAST track title. Sophomore Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.) also ran a strong race, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:52.76.
MEN'S TENNIS (2-1) ... In its only match of the week, the PC men's tennis team defeated Vermont, 5-2, at Central Connecticut. Sophomore Dennis Fabian of Norwalk, Conn. (No. 2 singles), sophomore Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I. (No. 3 singles), sophomore Chris Riccabono of Franklin Lakes, N.J. (No. 4 singles) and senior John Poloski of Warwick, R.I. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins for the Friars.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL...(5-20, 4-13 BIG EAST)...The Friars were 1-1 last week while falling to #6 Connecticut, 88-53 in Storrs then defeating Pittsburgh, 91-71 in Providence. The win over the Panthers was the largest margin of victory for the Friars this season. Three players scored in double figures including junior co-captain Meghan Hinds (Toledo, OH) with a team high 21 points. Sophomore Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, CA) tallied 19 points and eight boards while rookie Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, NY) connected on 14 points. Both Jen Gombotz (Southington, CT) and Kerri Sullivan (Walpole, MA) made a sea son high seven assists. The Friars are 2-3 in their last five games. Roberts has scored 16.2 points and Hinds has tallied 10.6 points in those five games. The Friars face St. John's at home on Tuesday as the squad will honor seniors Dana Simonelli and Kerri Sullivan in their final home games of their careers. The BIG EAST Championship begins Saturday, February 27 at Rutgers. Pairings for the tournament will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (15-12, 8-9)...The Friars played three games in seven days with two coming against ranked teams. On Monday, February 15, the Friars faced eighth-ranked St. John's in New York and fell, 104-70. Jamel Thomas (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with 21 points and nine rebounds. On Saturday, February 22nd, PC traveled to Villanova. Thomas scored a career high 38 points with nine rebounds in the win. He scored 12 of the Friars' 14 points in the overtime. Justin Farley (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) made his first start of the season and put together his second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Erron Maxey (So., Lake Elsinore, Cal.) was also in double figures with ten points and six rebounds. Providence closed out the three-game run on Monday, February 22 with a visit from 4th-ranked Connecticut. Thomas again led the way with 20 points and six rebounds. Farley added 14 and Maxey 13 in the 72-65 loss. The Friars forced UConn into a season-high 25 turnovers. For his games against St. John's and Villanova, Thomas was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the fourth time this season, the most ever by a PC player in the 20 years of the BIG EAST.
BASEBALL (3-1)...The Friars opened the season with a pair of doubleheaders against the College of Charleston in South Carolina on February 20 and 21. PC won the first three games of the series with 5-4, 1-0 and 5-3 wins before losing the final game, 4-2. Mike Scott (So., Darien, Conn.) led all PC hitters going 6-13 (.462) with five rbi's. Josh Burnham (Sr., Tolland, Conn.) and Rob Corraro (Sr., Madison, Conn.) each pitched complete game wins. Andy Scott (So., Milltown, N.J.) went 6-2/3 innings in the 1-0 win. Todd Murray (Sr., Andover, Mass.) got the final out of that game for his first save of the year. PC goes on its spring trip beginning on February 27th at Homestead, Florida.
MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The Friars competed at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship on Feb. 20-21 and finished 11th of 13 teams. Junior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland) was PC's top finisher placing second in the mile in a time of 4:09.07. Senior Ben Noad (Bristol, England) earned a pair of fourth place finishes in the 3,000 meters (8:23.46) and the 5,000 meters (14:29.61).
MEN'S (5-5) AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (6-5).. The Friars are idle until the BIG EAST Championship, February 24-27. This year's mmet will take place for the first time at the Goodwill Games Swimming Center in Uniondale, N.Y.
MEN'S HOCKEY (17-13, 11-9)... In its only game of the week, Providence College defeated Merrimack, 4-3, in overtime on Feb. 19 at Schneider Arena. Senior Jon Cameron (Langley, British Columbia) scored 30 seconds into overtime to give PC the win. Junior defenseman Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.) led the Friar offense with two power-play goals. PC's other goal was scored by junior Josh MacNevin (W. Lethbridge, Alberta). Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 28 saves in the win.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY (17-10-2, 13-7-2)... PC posted a 1-2 mark in three non-conference games last week. On Feb. 19, the Friars defeated Minnesota State, 4-2, at Mankato, Minn. Junior Jennifer Bill (Minnestrista, Minn.), freshman Jackie Tamsin (Branford, Conn.), freshman Beth Wolff (Hibbing, Minn.) and senior Myia Yates (St. Paul, Minn.) all scored for the Friars. Freshman goaltender Brigid Keady (Glencoe, Ill.) recorded 16 stops in the win. On Feb. 20, the second-ranked Univ. of Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the Friars, 1-0, at Minneapolis, Minn. Sophomore Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) played strong in net for PC, making 37 saves. The following afternoon, Minnesota completed the weekend sweep with a 5-1 win. Yates netted the lone goal for PC. DeCosta recorded 31 stops in net.
