Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta) helped the men's hockey team post a 2-1 mark last week. Pisani notched one goal in the Friars' 7-3 win against Cornell on Jan. 5, one goal in PC's 5-3 victory against Northeastern on Jan. 8 and one goal and one assist in the Friars' 5-4 loss to the Huskies on Jan. 9.

Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) led the women's hockey team to two wins against Maine on Jan. 8-9. She made 16 saves in a 3-1 win on Jan. 8 and 17 saves in a 2-0 shutout on Jan. 9.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The PC women's indoor track team did not compete. The Friars will return to action on Jan. 16 at the New England Challenge at Brown.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL...(2-12, 1-5 BIG EAST).... The Friars were 0-3 last week losing to Georgetown (81-43), Syracuse (82-64) and #9 Notre Dame (79-56). At Georgetown, the Friars struggled offensively shooting only 20% from the floor. Three players scored eight points while PC did manage to outrebound the Hoyas, 46-43. Senior Kerri Sullivan (Walpole, MA) grabbed 12 boards. At home with the Orangewoman, the Friars continued to struggle as they recorded a 27% percent from the field. Monika Roberts (Antioch, CA) and Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, NY) each contributed 12 points. The Friars fought hard at #9 Notre Dame with only a four point halftime deficit, 39-35 as the Friars shot .538 from the floor in the first 20 minutes. With no answer to ND's Ruth Riley (36 pts, 13 rebs), Notre Dame crept away with a 79-56 victory. The Friars recorded a .442 field goal percent from the floor while keeping the Irish to only 40%. Roberts scored 13 to lead the Friars. PC plays at Miami on Wednesday then returns home for a noon BE TV matchup with Villanova on Sunday.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (10-5, 3-3)...The Friars were 1-1 in the first full week of January. On Tuesday, January 5th, the Friars defeated West Virginia, 90-87 in overtime. This game saw WVU's Jarett Kearse hit a 30-foot, running, three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 69-69. Before it was over, WVU set a BIG EAT record with 41 fouls as six Mountaineers fouled out. PC set a BIG EAST record by taking 59 free throws in the game and the two teams combined for 39 points (21-18) in the five minute overtime which was also a BIG EAST record. The Friars had five players in double figures led by JAMEL THOMAS (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) who had 22. KENDRICK MOORE (Sr., Hartford, Conn.) and COREY WRIGHT (Sr., New York, N.Y.) each had 12 while JUSTIN FARLEY (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) had 11 and JOHN LINEHAN (So., Chester, Pa.) had ten. The Friars then saw their four-game winning streak snapped at Georgetown on Saturday, January 9th, by a 75-70 score. THOMAS turned in his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. FARLEY added a season high 12 points in the game while ERRON MAXEY (So., Lake Elsinore, Cal.) added 11. The game was the first for Georgetown following Coach John Thompson's decision to resign. PC travels to Syracuse (1/12) and Boston College (1/17) this week.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The Providence College men's indoor track team did not compete. The Friars will return to action on Jan. 16 at the New England Challenge at Brown.

MEN'S (3-2) AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (3-3)...Did not compete. Will resume January 16 vs UNH at home.

MEN'S HOCKEY (9-9, 5-5)... The Friars recorded a 2-1 mark last week. On Tuesday, Jan. 5, the Friars earned a 7-3 victory against Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. Senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta) led the Friar offense with two goals in the third period, including the game winner. Sophomore Heath Gordon (Pembroke, Mass.), junior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta), senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.), sophomore Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) and junior Nick Lent (Westwood, Mass.) also scored for PC. Sophomore Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 21 stops in net while earning his sixth win of the season. On Jan. 8, the Friars earned a 5-3 win against Northeastern at Matthews Arena. The Friars were led by junior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) who scored two goals, including the game winner. The Friars' other goals were scored by junior Jason Ialongo (Cranston, R.I.), senior Jon Cameron (Langley, British Columbia) and Pisani. Ballard recorded a season-high 34 stops in the win. The following night, the Huskies defeated the Friars, 5-4, at Schneider Arena. Junior Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.), Pisani, Ialongo and Cameron all scored for PC. Ballard registered 30 saves in the loss.
