Where is the Providence College athletic department going and how are we going to get there? What would the ideal department look like? What is our purpose? The answers to these questions are at the crux of our new student-centered vision and mission. After many months of hard work, I am excited to share the athletic department's new vision and mission with you today.
Why have a vision and mission?
Although creating a vision for success in any organization can be daunting, I believe it is critical to establish a compass that can guide and motivate each individual beyond the day-to-day. A meaningful vision and mission provides the "bigger picture" context necessary for sound short- and long-term decision making.
Our vision is the ideal that we are constantly moving towards. Our mission reminds us of our daily purpose.
Departmental Vision
Providence College's intercollegiate athletics program is the most respected of all institutions competing at the NCAA Division I level. It is a student-athlete centered program, with roots steeped in the Dominican tradition, in which each student-athlete receives the training and support necessary to reach his or her full academic, athletic and human potential.
Each sport team competes strongly for success at the conference and national championship levels. Every student-athlete graduates. Providence College athletics consistently achieves a top 50 ranking in the Sears' Directors Cup. The athletic department is a continuing source of pride for the entire campus community, honoring the College's values and traditions.
The department exercises fiscal vigilance, innovative approaches to revenue-generation, and strong partnerships with the College, alumni, donors and the community to secure the resources necessary to realize this student-athlete centered vision.
Departmental Mission
The mission of the Providence College intercollegiate athletics program is to foster the personal development and education of young men and women through their participation in NCAA Division I athletics. Athletic contests provide an opportunity for the campus and the community at large to demonstrate their support of the college, its athletics program, and the student-athletes. Athletic department staff strives to fulfill student-athlete needs and goals in an environment steeped in the Dominican tradition in which honesty, integrity, mutual respect, effort and constant improvement are cherished and cultivated.
New questions
With our vision and mission in place we are now asking progressive questions such as, "How does this decision/action move us closer to our vision? Are we meeting our mission? Where must we focus to ensure our mission is met?"
We're pushing forward and celebrating along the way. Some recent department highlights include:
* Men's hockey is currently ranked 11th in the nation with a 5-0 record while outscoring their opponents 31-11.
* Women's hockey is currently ranked 8th in the nation following a 6-0 victory over the University of Vermont.
* Men's cross-country captured its 22nd New England Championship and is currently ranked in the top 17 in the nation.
* Women's cross-country won the Penn State National Meet and has been ranked as high as 7th in the nation.
* Following its Italian tour this summer, the men's basketball program tipped off its season at the annual Mal Brown scrimmage in October and is preparing for the start of the Big East season.
* Women's basketball completed its European tour this summer with a perfect 5-0 record and is anxiously awaiting the start of the Big East season.
* Blake James has joined us as the Director of Athletic Fundraising. He has extensive experience, having served as the Director of Athletic Fundraising at the University of Miami and as assistant director at the University of Nebraska.
Thank you for your continued support of Providence College.
