John Marinatto Offered Assistant Vice President For Athletic Fundraising Position

July 12, 2001

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College President, Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P., announced on Monday, July 9, 2001, that he has asked the College's athletics director, John Marinatto, to assume the newly-created position of Assistant Vice President for Athletic Fundraising. This new position will focus on cultivating relationships and new sources of gifts from individuals and corporations on a national scale.

Father Smith pointed out that this position it being created to address an important unmet financial need to support the long-term goals of the College's athletics program.

"John Marinatto has played a significant role in the success of the College's athletics program during his 15-year tenure as director of athletics," Father Smith emphasized. "To provide the appropriate leadership and direction for this new position, I felt it was vitally important to fill it with a senior official of the College with John's experience, talents and contacts. Clearly, no one person could assume both of these major responsibilities."

Father Smith continued, "Creating this position is long overdue. I have spoken to John on several occasions about the need for this position and this seemed to be the appropriate time to carry out this change in assignment."

The President of the College also pointed out that he has asked Marinatto to continue as athletics director until January 1, 2002 in order to provide for an orderly transition. During this interim period, Father Smith will establish a committee to conduct a national search for a new athletic director.
