Friars Finish 101st In NACDA Directors' Cup Standings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College finished 101st of 318 eligible colleges and universities in the final 2002-03 NACDA Directors' Cup standings released on June 26. The NACDA Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Each national championship receives 100 points. A total of 268 (84 percent) of the 318 eligible colleges and universities scored points in the 2002-03 NACDA Director's Cup.
Stanford captured the 2002-03 NACDA Director's Cup after scoring 1,420.5 points. Texas (1,094 points) and Ohio State (1,074.8 points) finished second and third, respectively.
Providence received its 169.5 points based on the men's and women's cross country teams' finishes at the NCAA Championships in November, the women's indoor track squad's finish at the NCAA Championship in March and the women's outdoor track team's finish at the NCAA Championship in June. The PC women's cross country team finished sixth and received 72 points and the men's team finished 13th and received 51 points. The women's track team earned 40.5 points after finishing 32nd at the NCAA Indoor Championship and earned 46.5 points after placing 27th at the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
Providence finished 11th among the 14 BIG EAST schools behind Notre Dame (13th - 822.5 points), Miami (36th - 485 points), Villanova (46th - 433.75 points), Connecticut (51st - 386 points), Georgetown (61st - 288 points), Boston College (62nd - 282 points), Pittsburgh (68th - 260.5 points), Syracuse (76th - 208 points), Rutgers (80th - 202 points) and West Virginia (84th - 196.5 points). The Friars finished ahead of three BIG EAST schools, Virginia Tech (112th - 157 points), St. John's (119th - 149 points) and Seton Hall (149th - 101.5 points).
Last year, Providence finished 112th of 323 eligible colleges and universities in the final NACDA Director's Cup Standings.
