PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Athletic Program finished 2001-02 ranked 112th of 261 ranked colleges and universities in the nation, according to the final Sears Directors' Cup rankings released on June 26. Stanford University finished in first place for the eighth consecutive year. Of the 323 eligible colleges and universities in the NCAA Division I, a total of 261 (81 percent) scored points in the Sears Directors' Cup competition.
The Sears Directors' Cup is presented annually by the nation's athletic directors and is designed to recognize institutions that maintain a broad based athletic program. It measures achievements in a total of 10 men's and 10 women's sports, awarding points based on their level of excellence.
Providence's standing was enhanced by the strong performances of the cross country and track teams at NCAA competitions this year. The women's track team placed 37th at the NCAA Indoor Championship and the men's and women's cross country squads each finished in 10th place at the NCAA Championships.
