Providence Athletes Collect Top Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced this week that Providence College junior Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) and senior Dylan Williams (Middlesex, England) were named to the 1998 GTE Academic All-America Spring At-Large Team.
Ganiel, a political science major, has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.97 in her first three years at Providence. It marks the fourth time Ganiel has earned GTE District 1 At-Large honors. Over the past two years, she also has been named to GTE First, Second and Third Academic All-America national teams. This spring Ganiel has excelled on the track capturing the 10,000 meter titles at the New England Championship and the ECAC Championship. She will compete on Wednesday, June 3 in the 10,000 at the NCAA Championship in Buffalo, N.Y.
Williams, an economics major who graduated with a 3.87 cumulative grade point average, helped the PC tennis team earn its third consecutive third-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship in April. He posted a 21-9 mark this season in the No. 1 singles position. In four years at Providence, Williams registered an 81-33 record. For Williams, it marks the third time he has received GTE District 1 At-Large honors.
Since being named to the District 1 At-Large Teams, Ganiel and Williams will now be considered for GTE Academic All-America At-Large National Team honors, which will be determined June 16.
