Friar Great Receives Honorary Degree

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College awarded former Friar great Lou Lamoriello '63 an honorary degree at the 2001 Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 20, at the Providence Civic Center.
Lamoriello, who excelled in both hockey and baseball while at Providence College, served as assistant coach for the men's hockey team before taking the head coaching position in 1968. In his 15 seasons as a head coach, he led the team to a record of 248-179-13, which included 11 post-season tournaments. He is the all-time winningest coach in Friar history.
A native of Providence, Lamoriello established the HOCKEY EAST Conference and also served as its first commissioner. In addition to being a member of Providence College's Athletic Hall of Fame, he served as the general manager of the 1998 United States Olympic Hockey Team.
Currently, Lamoriello is in his 14th season as the President and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. Under his influence, the Devils have grown to be one of the top teams in the NHL, winning Stanley Cup titles in 1995 and 2000. In their 2000-01 regular season, the Devils won their fourth consecutive Eastern Conference Atlantic Division title with the best record in team history - 48-19-12-3.
