Providence College Athletic Progams Ranked 54th in Sears Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Athletic Program is ranked 54th in the nation (228 points), according to the latest Sears Director's Cup rankings released on April 23 after the final winter standings. Providence is seventh in the BIG EAST Conference behind Boston College (26th), Georgetown (37th), Connecticut (38th), Miami (48th), Villanova (53rd) and West Virginia (52nd).
The Sears Director's Cup is presented annually by the nation's athletic directors and is designed to recognize institutions that maintain a broad based athletic program. It measures achievements in a total of 10 men's and 10 women's sports, awarding points based on their level of excellence.
Providence's gained points during the winter season due to the strong seasons posted by men's basketball (33rd, 25 points), men's hockey (ninth, 20 points) and men's indoor track (38th, 44 points). All three teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
During the fall season, Providence earned points based on the strength of its men's and women's cross country programs which finished third and ninth in the country, respectively.
Providence College has the potential to improve its standings after the spring season as the men's and women's track teams are having excellent seasons and have the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championship.
