PROVIDENCE COLLEGE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
TROY LAKE (Sr., Edmonton, Alberta)... Lake led the PC offense with two goals and three assists in PC's Quarterfinal series against BU on March 12-14. PC won the series, 2-1, and will advance to the Semifinals for the first time since 1996. Lake leads the Friars in goals with 19.
JAMIE ATHAS (Fr., Holyoke, Mass.)...The Friars' shortstop was named the BIG EAST Co-Rookie of the Week after helping PC to a 4-0 week by going 8-for-17 (.471) with five rbi's and two stolen bases. Athas was 5-for-6 with three rbi's in PC's 18-6 win over Delaware. For the season, he is hitting .344 with 13 rbi's.
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... Did not compete
LACROSSE (0-4, 0-1) ... The lacrosse team posted a 0-2 mark last week. The Friars were defeated, 21-7, at Brown on March 9. Junior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) led the Friars with four goals. Senior Robb Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), junior Brian McCarthy (Townsend, Mass.) and freshman Kevin Sweeney (South Salem, N.Y.) all combined to make 21 saves. On March 13, Stony Brook defeated PC, 3-1, in Stony Brook, N.Y. Leahy scored the lone goal for the Friars. McCarthy made 17 stops in the loss.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (16-14, 9-9 in BIG EAST)... The Providence College basketball season came to an end on March 10th in the NIT as the Friars fell, 92-86 to North Carolina State in a first round game. The never-say-die Friars rallied from a 17-point, second half deficit to cut the lead to four points with a minute left, but couldn't get any closer. JAMEL THOMAS (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) closed out his brilliant Providence College career with a game high 25 points. For his career, he finishes third on PC's all-time scoring list with 1,971 career points. SEAN CONNOLLY (Fr., Peabody, Mass.) added a career high 24 points and ERRON MAXEY (So., Lake Elsinore, Cal.) had his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the game. The NIT loss was the final game in the PC careers of Thomas, JUSTIN FARLEY (Indianapolis, Ind.), KENDRICK MOORE (Hartford, Conn.) and COREY WRIGHT (New York, N.Y.).
BASEBALL (13-3)...The Friars were 4-0 on the week to run their current winning streak to seven straight. PC opened the week with a 7-0 shutout win over Central Connecticut at Hendricken Field. Andy Scott (So., Milltown, N.J.) pitched a two-hit complete game walking two and striking out five for the win. Scott gave up a double in the first and a single in the ninth for CCSU's only hits in the game. On Friday, the Friars played at Delaware taking advantage of seven Blue Hen errors on the way to a 9-4 win. JOSH BURNHAM (Sr., Tolland, Conn.) got the complete game victory. NEAL McCARTHY (Fr., Warwick, R.I.) hit his first career home run in the game and MIKE O'KEEFE (So., Hamden, Conn.) drilled his third. Saturday saw the Friars sweep a doubleheader from Delaware winning the first game, 2-1 and the nightcap, 18-6. Senior MARC DesROCHES (Cambridge, Mass.) got the complete game win. ANGELO CIMINIELLO (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) drove in the winning run in the sixth with a one-out double as he returned from the injured list. Game Two saw shortstop JAMIE ATHAS (Fr., Holyoke, Mass.) get a career high five hits while driving in three runs in the 18-6 victory. KEITH REED (Jr., Auburn, Mass.) was 3-for-5 on the day with five runs batted in. Centerfielder MIKE SCOTT (Fr., Darien, Conn.) drove in three runs with his first career home run. ROB CORRARO (Sr., Madison, Conn.) pitched six innings to get his fourth win of the season.
PC will try to return to home action this week. Tuesday's game at Central Connecticut has been postponed due to snow. The Friars host Quinnipiac on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. For the weekend, the University of Maine will visit Hendricken Field for single games on Friday (2:00 p.m.), Saturday (noon) and Sunday (noon).
MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... Did not compete
SOFTBALL (2-9)...The Friars did not play last week. They travel to the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina this weekend. The Friars will face Coastal Carolina, Florida International, St. Bonaventure and Marshall.
MEN'S TENNIS (4-3)... The men's tennis posted a 0-2 mark last week. On March 13, the Friars were defeated by Colgate, 4-0 at Ithaca, N.Y. Also on March 13, Cornell defeated PC, 7-0, at Ithaca.
MEN'S HOCKEY (20-16-1, 12-11-1)... On March 12-14, the Friars played the BU Terriers in a best of three HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal series at PC's Schneider Arena. On March 14, PC defeated BU, 5-1, in the third game to clinch the Quarterfinal series. Junior Doug Sheppard (Geogretown, Ontario), senior Jon Cameron (Langley, British Columbia), junior Josh MacNevin (W. Lethbridge, Alberta), junior Nick Lent (Wetwood, Mass.) and senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta) all scored for PC in the 5-1 victory. Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) registered 14 saves in the win. On March 13, BU defeated the Friars, 8-2, to even the HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal series at 1-1. Lent and junior Jerry Keefe (Billerica, Mass.) scored for the Friars. Ballard and senior Mark Kane (St. Albert, Alberta) combined to make 21 saves. On Friday, PC defeated BU, 8-2, to earn its first HOCKEY EAST Tournament win since 1996. Sheppard led the Friars with two goals. Freshman Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.), sophomore Matt Libby (Saco, Maine), senior Mike Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.), junior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta), senior Jon Coe (Anoka, Minn.) and Lake also scored for the Friars. Ballard recorded 29 saves in net.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY (19-12-3, 15-8-3)... In its only game last week, the women's hockey team was eliminated from the ECAC Quarterfinals with a 3-0 loss to Northeastern at Boston, Mass. Sophomore Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) recorded 34 stops in the loss for the Friars. The Friars finished the season with a 19-12-3 mark.
