Keith Kelly (Sr., Drogheda, Ireland)
captured the 5,000 meter title at the IC4A Championship on March 5. With his time of 13:57.78, Kelly qualified for the NCAA Championship on March 10-11 at Fayetteville, Ark.

Ken Leahy (Sr., Cohasset, Mass.)
tallied five goals and five assists to lead the PC lacrosse team to two wins last week. On March 1, Leahy recorded four points (two goals, two assists) in PC's 10-9 win over Holy Cross. On March 4, Leahy had a game high six points (three goals, three assists) in the Friars' 19-2 victory against Wagner College.

Kim Mathias (So., Ballston, Lake, N.Y.)
registered seven points this weekend, in the team's 4-2 win over Boston College and a 5-4 upset victory over Dartmouth. Mathias netted a hat trick vs. BC and then scored one goal, and three assists at Dartmouth.

Jessica Tabb (Jr., Holland, Mass.)
recorded a hat trick in the team's 5-4 victory at Dartmouth and added three assists in the team's 4-2 win at Boston College. Tabb leads the team in scoring with 26 goals and 15 assists.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The Providence College men's track team competed at the IC4A Indoor Track Championship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. on March 4-5. Senior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland) captured his first IC4A Indoor title when he won the 5,000 meters in a time of 13:57.78. With his time Kelly qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 10-11 at Fayetteville, Ark. The Friars also got a strong performance from sophomore Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) who finished fourth in the mile in a time of 4:08.64.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK
The Providence College women's track team competed at the ECAC Indoor Track Championship in Boston, Mass. on March 3-4. The Friars were led by sophomore Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.Y.) who finished sixth in the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:44.51. PC's Distance Medley Relay Team of freshman Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), junior Joan Bohlke (Old Saybrook, Conn.), Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) and Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) finished fifth in a time of 11:43.67.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (11-18/4-12)
The Friars closed out the regular season with a pair of losses. On March 1st, the Friars dropped a 77-72 decision at Villanova. On Sunday, March 5th, PC fell to the University of Pittsburgh, 57-53, in the season home finale.

At Villanova, the Friars got solid games from the front line as Erron Maxey (Jr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) and Romuald Augustin (Fr., Montreal, Que.) each scored 16 points and center Karim Shabazz (Jr., Far Rockaway, N.Y.) added 12 points. Abdul Mills (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) added nine points with four assists and Chris Rogers (Jr., Shreveport, La.) also had nine points with a career high seven assists.

Versus Pittsburgh, Providence College honored its lone senior, Llewellyn Cole (Sr., New York, N.Y.) in Senior Day ceremonies. The Friars led at halftime, 26-21, only to see the Panthers rally late in the game to take a 57-53 victory. Abdul Mills scored a BIG EAST career high 17 points with six rebounds and five assists. Donta Wade (Jr., Huntington, W.Va.) scored 15 points as he converted on five, three-pointers. PC shot just 31.0% on the afternoon.

The loss to Pittsburgh means the Friars are seeded 12th for the BIG EAST Tournament and will play #5-seed Seton Hall on Wednesday, March 8th at 3:30 p.m. If the Friars win that game, they will play on Thursday, March 9th against the winner of the Boston College-Connecticut game. That game will be played at 2:00 p.m.

MEN'S HOCKEY (18-16-2, 10-13-1)
The Friars closed out the regular season with a tie and a loss to Maine on March 3-4. On March 3, the Friars skated to a 6-6 tie with the Black Bears. The tie ended the Friars' four-game losing streak against Maine. Junior Adam Lee (Brampton, Ontario) led the Friars with his first collegiate two-goal game. PC's other goals were scored by sophomore Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.), senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario), sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) and freshman Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.). Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) registered 40 stops in the game. The following night, Maine defeated the Friars, 3-2. DiSalvatore and junior Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) each scored for PC. Ballard made 29 saves in the loss.

MEN'S LACROSSE (2-0, 1-0)
The Friars posted a 2-0 mark last week. PC opened the season with a 10-9 win against Holy Cross at PC's Glay Field on March 1. Junior Jeff Merklinger (South Orange, N.J.) tallied three goals to lead the Friars. Senior goaltender Brian McCarthy made 11 saves in the win. On March 3, PC improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in MAAC action with a 19-2 victory over Wagner College at Fairfield, Conn. Senior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) scored three goals and notched three assists for the Friars. McCarthy, freshman John Farley (West Simsbury, Conn.) and senior Kevin Kelly (Needham, Mass.) all combined to make 10 saves in net for the Friars.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (20-9-3/14-7-3)
The Friars posted a 2-0 record this past weekend with wins over Boston College (4-2) and Dartmouth (5-4). On March 3, the Friars defeated Boston College, 4-2, at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Sophomore Kim Mathias (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) recorded a hat trick for PC. Senior Jennifer Bill (Minnestrista, Minn.) also scored for the Friars. Junior Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) made 12 stops in the win. On March 4, the Friars defeated Dartmouth, 5-4, at Hanover, N.H. Junior Jess Tabb (Holland, Mass.) led the Friars with a hat trick. Senior Kerstin Matthews (Westford, Mass.) and freshman Melanie Ruzzi (Burnsville, Minn.) also scored for PC. DeCosta registered 37 saves in her second win of the weekend. The team will return to action on March 11, at Dartmouth College at 7:00 p.m. for the ECAC Quarterfinals.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (10-17/5-110)
The Friars completed their 1999-2000 regular season with a 102-68 loss to No. 1 Connecticut at the Providence Civic Center on February 29. Meghan Hinds (Sr., Perrysburg, Ohio) led Providence with 15 points, and Dani Trippany (Jr., Massena, N.Y.)and Monika Roberts (Jr., Pittsburg, Calif.) each had 12.

The Friars, the #11 seed in the 2000 BIG EAST Tournament, fell in the first round to #6 Villanova with a 73-53 loss at the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on March 4. Roberts netted a team-high 14 points for PC, while hinds scored 13 points in her final game wearing the Black and White.

MEN'S TENNIS (2-0)
The Friars won their only match of the week, 5-2 over the University of Vemont, on March 3. Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I., (No. 2 singles), Chris Riccobono of Frankiln, Lake, N.J., (No. 3 singles), Matt Jarvis of Fairhaven, Mass., (No. 4 singles) and Craig Roslund of Huntington, N.Y., (No. 6 singles) all captured victories.

The Friars swept the doubles competition with the teams of Paco Fabian (Norwalk, Conn.)/Riccobono, Dressler/Roslund, and Jarvis/Pat Moynihan (Queensbury, N.Y.), taking 9-7, 8-3, 9-8, wins, respectively.
