Providence College Athletes of the Week



Jess Tabb (Sophomore, Springfield, Mass.)... tallied three goals in the women's hockey team's two games against Niagara on Feb. 27-28. Tabb had two goals in PC's 2-1 win on Feb. 27 and one goal in PC's 3-3 tie on Feb. 28.



Justin Farley (Senior, Indianapolis, Ind.)... registered a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds in PC's 64-62 win against Georgetown on Feb. 27 at the Civic Center.

Jed Michnowicz (Senior, Santa Clara, CA)...finished out his illustrious swimming career at Providence by finishing 2nd in the 500 freestyle at the BIG EAST Championships. He became the first Friar in 15 years to earn All-BIG EAST honors.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... Freshman Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) competed at the ECAC Championship at BU and finished seventh in the mile in a time of 4:53.48.



LACROSSE (0-1) ... The lacrosse team posted a 0-1 mark last week. The Friars were defeated, 18-5, in their season opener against No. 7 Maryland at College Park, Md. on Feb. 27. Junior Ken Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) and senior Craig Schwalb (Bayville, N.Y.) each scored two goals to lead the offense. Sophomore Jeff Merklinger (South Orange, N.J.) also scored. Senior Robb Chambers (Bryn Mawr, Pa) and freshman Kevin Sweeney (South Salem, N.Y.) combined to make 18 saves in goal.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL...(5-22, 4-14 BIG EAST)...The Friars lost their final regular season game to St. John's, 69-62 on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The Friars held a 62-60 advantage with 4:27 remaining in the game before the Red Storm went on a 9-0 run to end the game. With the exception of the final four minutes, the Friars were ahead of the Storm for the entire game. The Friars shot 40% from the floor and held the Red Storm to only 37%.

The Friars were led by sophomore Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, CA) who tallied 17 points (6-10 fg) while sophomore Jen Gombotz (Southington, CT) tallied a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Seeded 11th in the BIG EAST Tournament, the Friars lost to Villanova, 68-59 in the First Round. Roberts and junior Meghan Hinds (Perrysburg, OH) led the Friars with 14 points each. Providence will graduate two seniors, Dana Simonelli and Kerri Sullivan and will return nine letterwinners for the 1999-2000 campaign.



MEN'S BASKETBALL (16-12, 9-9)... The Friars closed out their regular-season schedule with a thrilling 64-62 win against Georgetown at the Civic Center on Feb. 27. Sophomore Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Cal.) scored on a jump shot with time running out in the game to give the Friars the win. Maxey finished the game with 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior Justin Farley (Indianapolis, Ind.) tied his career high with 25 points. He also had a team high 11 rebounds. The win marked the final home game for PC's four seniors, Kendrick Moore (Hartford, Conn.), Corey Wright (New York, N.Y.) and Jamel Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.). PC finished the regular season, tied for seventh with a 9-9 mark. The Friars now advance to the BIG EAST Tournament where the squad will face Georgetown on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.



BASEBALL (4-2)...The Friars posted a 1-1 mark last week. On Feb. 27, PC defeated Northwood University, 17-1. Junior outfielder Keith Reed (Auburn, Mass.) led the Friar offense with three hits, including a home run, and six RBI. Senior pitcher Marc DesRoches got the win on the mound for the Friars. He pitched six innings, allowing one run while striking out eight batters. The following afternoon, PC was defeated by the University of Dayton, 8-6. Sophomore left fielder Mike O'Keefe (Hamden, Conn.) had three hits, scored two runs and recorded three RBI for PC. Senior Josh Burnham (Tolland, Conn.) pitched eight innings, surrendering seven hits and three runs, but striking out seven batters.



MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The Friars competed at the New England Indoor Track Championship at BU on Feb. 26-27 and finished eighth of 27 teams. Senior Rick Bush (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was PC's top finisher, placing first in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:13.43. Junior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland) finished second in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:26.51.



MEN'S (5-5) AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (6-5).. The Providence College men's and women's swimming teams closed out the 1998-99 season with 12th place finishes at the BIG EAST Championships this weekend. The Friars' men's team was led by senior Jed Michnowicz who became the first Friar in 15 years to capture All-BIG EAST honors with his second place finish in the 500 freestyle. His time of 4:30.41 was just .02 behind the first place finisher. Michnowicz followed with a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle and a 14th place finish in the 200 backstroke. He also swam the anchor leg on four relay teams for Providence. For the women, senior Carla Clemente led the women as she swam in the maximum of five relay events on the weekend. Both Friar teams achieved 95% season best times.



MEN'S HOCKEY (18-14-1, 12-9-1)... The Friars registered a 1-1-1 mark last week. On Feb. 23, PC skated to a 5-5 overtime tie against BC at Schneider Arena. Senior Troy Lake (Edmonton, Alberta) led the Friar offense with two goals. PC's other goals were scored by junior Fernando Pisani (Edmonton, Alberta), senior Jon Coe (Anoka, Minn.) and sophomore Mike Farrell (Carmel, Ind.). Sophomore goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) recorded 30 saves in the tie. On Feb. 26, the Friars earned a 3-2 win at Schneider Arena. Lake, sophomore J.J. Picinic (Fort Lee, N.J.) and Farrell each scored for PC. Senior goaltender Mark Kane (Edmonton, Alberta) registered 30 saves for the Friars. On Feb. 27, UMass defeated the Friars, 3-1, at Amherst, Mass. Junior Josh MacNevin (W. Lethbridge, Alberta) tallied the lone goal for PC. Ballard made 25 stops in the loss.



WOMEN'S HOCKEY (18-10-3, 14-7-3)... PC posted a 1-0-1 mark in two ECAC games last week. On Feb. 27, the Friars defeated Niagara, 2-1, at Schneider Arena. Sophomore Jess Tabb (Springfield, Mass.) led the offense with two goals. Sophomore Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) made 18 stops in net. The following afternoon, PC and Niagara skated to a 3-3 overtime tie at Schneider Arena. Junior Kerstin Matthews (Westford, Mass.), sophomore Corinne Rosen (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Tabb all scored for PC. DeCosta made 17 stops in net.
