Keith Kelly (Sr., Drogheda, Ireland)... Kelly captured the 3,000 (8:17.87) and 5,000 (14:17.93) meter titles and helped the men's track team place seventh of 13 teams at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship. With his time of 14:17.93 in the 5,000, Kelly qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship. With his wins in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, Kelly becomes the first Friar to win two BIG EAST titles at the same meet since Mark Burdis captured the BIG EAST 3,000 and 5,000 crowns at the 1993 Indoor Championship.
Hamish Thorpe (So., Aukland, New Zealand)... Thorpe finished strong in the mile at the BIG EAST Championship, placing second in a time of 4:11.50 and earning All-BIG EAST honors. Thorpe helped the men's track team place seventh of 13 teams at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The men's track team scored 47 points and finished seventh of 13 teams at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship in Syracuse, N.Y. on February 20. For the Friars, their seventh place finish was the team's top finish at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship since the 1993 squad placed seventh. The Friars were led by senior Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland), who captured the 3,000 (8:17.87) and 5,000 (14:17.93) meter titles and earned All-BIG EAST accolades. With his time of 14:17.93 in the 5,000, Kelly qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship. The wins also gave Kelly his first BIG EAST Indoor titles and his second and third BIG EAST titles overall (1999 Outdoor 10,000 meter title). With his wins in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, Kelly becomes the first Friar to win two BIG EAST titles at the same meet since Mark Burdis captured the BIG EAST 3,000 and 5,000 crowns at the 1993 Indoor Championship. Also in the 5,000 meters, sophomore Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) placed third (14:24.05) and earned All-BIG EAST honors. Sophomore Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) finished strong in the mile, placing second in a time of 4:11.50 and earning All-BIG EAST honors. PC's Distance Medley Team of freshman Chris Livesey (Preston, England), junior Kevin Cashman (Westwood, Mass.), sophomore Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) and senior Larry Morrissey (Waterford, Ireland) captured a first-place finish in a time of 9:54.49.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (9-16/2-10)...The Friars snapped their ten game losing streak with a 47-45 win versus the Miami Hurricanes in Miami on Wednesday, February 16th. The Friars held Miami to just 31.9% (15-47) field goal shooting on the night while holding the Hurricanes to a season low 45 points. Erron Maxey (Jr., Lake Elsinore, Calif.) led the Friars with 14 points and eight rebounds while Romuald Augustin (Fr., Montreal, Que.) added 11 points and six boards. For Maxey, the game marked his tenth consecutive game in double figures and the 23rd time in 26 games he's scored ten or more points in a game. Miami was led by John Salmons who had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Providence shot 38.0% in the win and won the battle of the boards, 37-34.
The Friars return to action this week as they travel to Notre Dame on Wednesday, February 23rd for a 7:30 p.m. game versus the Fighting Irish. On Saturday, February 26th, the Friars return home to face the Boston College Eagles in a game that will start at noon at the Providence Civic Center.
MEN'S HOCKEY (16-15-1, 8-12)... On February 18-19, Providence posted a 1-1 record against second-ranked Boston University. On February 18, PC earned a 5-2 upset against the Terriers at Schneider Arena. Sophomore Drew Omicioli (W. Warwick, R.I.) led the PC offense with two goals and two assists. Senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario), junior Adam Lee (Brampton, Ontario) and freshman Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) also scored for the Friars. Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) registered 32 stops in the win. The following night, the Terriers scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to defeat the Friars, 4-3, at Walter Brown Arena. Sheppard, junior Heath Gordon (Pembroke, Mass.) and senior Josh MacNevin (W. Lethbridge, Alberta) all scored for PC. Ballard registered 34 stops in net.
WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK... The Providence College women's track team scored 14 points and finished 13th of 13 teams at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship in Syracuse, N.Y. on Sunday, February 20. The Friars were led by freshman Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) who placed fifth in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:51.95. PC's Distance Medley Relay Team of sophomore Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.), junior Joan Bohlke (Old Saybrook, Conn.), junior Kathy Sutkowski (Edison, N.J.) and senior Dana Ostrander (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) finished fifth in a time of 11:55.26.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY (17-7-3/11-6-3)... The squad began the week with an exhibition game versus the US National Team on Feb. 19. Team USA handed the Friars a 6-0 defeat, with Sara DeCosta (Warwick, R.I.) recording 45 saves in goal for PC. On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Friars travelled across town for a non-conference game versus Brown University. The Friars were handed a 4-0 loss, as DeCosta made 28 saves.
The Friars will return to action on Feb. 26, versus Princeton University, at Schneider Arena, at 2:00 p.m.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING (4-7)(7-4)... Both the men's and women's squads finished 13th at the 1999-00 Big East Champioships.
Paced by seniors Kevin Reeder (Southbury, Conn.), Joe Gesker (Herdnon, Va.), Meghan Robinson (Plano, Texas) and Karen Cardwell (Marietta, Ga.) the squad saw all ten of it's relay teams place, and turn in their best times of the season.
Coach O'Neil was pleased with the team's overall performance as 95% of the swimmers were able to record their personal best times this season in their respective events.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (9-14/4-9)... The Friars are now 0-5 in February as they lost at Seton Hall, 68-62, at Walsh Gym on February 18. PC had four players in double figures, with junior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) netting a team-high 13 points, while Meghan Hinds (Perrysburg, Ohio) and Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) chipped in 11 points apiece. Junior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) rounded out the Friars' top scorers with 10 points. The Friars will play their final road game of the regular season on Wednesday, February 23, when they travel to Washington, D.C, to take on the Hoyas of Georgetown University. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m. in McDonough Arena. PC will then return home to host Villanova University on Saturday, February 26 at Alumni Hall and the University of Connecticut on Tuesday, February 29 at the Providence Civic Center.
MEN'S TENNIS (3-1)... In their only match of the week, the Friars defeated Central Connecticut, 6-1, at New Britain, Conn. Junior Paco Fabian of Norwalk, Conn. (No. 1 singles), junior Keith Dressler of Cranston, R.I. (No. 2 singles), senior John Sayward of Branford, Conn. (No. 4 singles), sophomore Craig Roslund of Huntington, N.Y. (No. 5 singles) and sophomore Pat Moynihan of Queensbury, N.Y. (No. 6 singles) all earned singles wins for the Friars.
