Women’s Hockey Shut Out At No. 6/7 UConn, 5-0

Hope Walinski made 35 saves for the Friars.

STORRS, Conn. – The Providence College women's hockey team was defeated by No. 6/7 UConn, 5-0, on Saturday, Jan. 3 at Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The Friars fell to 7-12-2 overall and 4-6-2 in Hockey East play, while the Huskies improved to 15-3-2 and 8-1-1. Graduate student goaltender Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) made 35 saves for the Friars.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
 
-The Huskies opened the scoring for the second straight game at 2:10 of the first period from Sadie Hotles. Livvy Dewar earned the lone assist.
 
-UConn doubled its advantage to 2-0 on the power play at 6:38 of the first period from Kyla Josifovic. Julia Pellerin and Livvy Dewar recorded the assists.
 
-At 14:38 of the opening frame, the Huskies extended their lead to 3-0 on a goal from Megan Woodworth, assisted by Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux.
 
-Shots on goal after the first period were 14-12 in favor of the Huskies.
 
-The teams skated scoreless in the second period with no power plays awarded. Providence outshot the Huskies 9-7 in the period and held a 22-21 edge in shots on goal after 40 minutes.
 
-With 2:45 remaining in regulation, Woodworth scored an unassisted empty-net goal to make it 4-0, her second goal of the game.
 
-UConn added one more goal at 17:42 of the third period from Claire Murdoch to make it 5-0. Ashley Allard and Julia Pellerin recorded the assists.
 
-Graduate student goaltender Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) made 35 saves for the Friars. It marked Walinski's 12th game this season with 30 or more saves.
 
-Providence is now 42-29-12 all-time against UConn.
 
-The Friars are now 3-7-0 against ranked opponents this season.
 
-Providence dropped to 3-8-0 on the road this season.
