Indianapolis, Ind. — The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Butler Bulldogs (11-13, 4-9 BIG EAST), 82-81, on Saturday, February 8 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The Friars moved to 11-12 overall and 5-7 in BIG EAST play. Senior Bensley Joseph (Arlington, Mass.) scored a game-high 26 points, including five threes made. Sophomore Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) scored a career-high 23 points on a career-high seven three-pointers. For the Friars, it marked their fifth loss of the season by two points or less. The Friars made 16 of 32 attempts from three-point territory, which was their most since 2019.
FIRST HALF:
Corey Floyd Jr (Franklin, N.J.) kicked off the day's scoring action with a driving layup.
Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) knocked down a deep three to help extend the Friars' lead to 9-4 at the under-16 media timeout (15:45).
Bensley Joseph (Arlington, Mass.) drained a three-pointer for the Friars as both teams exchanged baskets. Butler responded with a three of their own, tying the game at 12 (13:26).
Joseph sank another three-pointer to counter a brief Butler scoring run and cut the Bulldogs' lead to 18-17 at the under-12 media timeout (10:50).
The two teams exchanged baskets leading into the under-eight media timeout. Barron knocked down a three for the Friars, to which Butler responded with a quick basket in the paint to extend their lead to 30-25 (7:11).
The teams continued to stay hot from three as Jayden Pierre (Elizebeth, N.J.) and Barron traded threes with the Bulldogs' (6:52).
Floyd snapped a Friars three-minute field goal drought for the Friars with a driving dunk out of the under-four media timeout (3:00).
Joseph knocked down his fourth three of the half to cut the Bulldogs' lead to two. Butler responded with a three to extend the lead to 41-36, with 44 seconds remaining in the half.
Floyd knocked down a deep buzzer beater three for the Friars to end the half. Butler lead 41-39.
Joseph led the Friars in first half scoring, with 15 points. Floyd also added a double figure scoring effort with 11 points.
SECOND HALF:
Barron snapped a 6-0 Butler scoring run to start the half with a three pointer from the left wing (18:19).
Joseph continued to stay hot from three-point range, sinking his fifth three of the day. The Friars trailed by seven at the under-16 media timeout, 55-48.
Butler kept the momentum as they extended their lead to double digits with 13 minutes remaining in the half. Corey Floyd scored four straight for the Friars that brought the score to 55-62 (12:10).
Out of the under-12 media timeout, Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin, Nigeria) slammed an emphatic dunk on a lob from Pierre (10:35).
As the two teams traded baskets, Barron connected on a three from the corner to cut the Butler lead to 74-66 at the under-eight media timeout (7:50).
Barron knocked down his sixth three of the day that brought the friars within two at 76-74 (4:56).
Floyd tied the game for the Friars at 76 with a mid-range jumper (3:43).
The two teams traded baskets as Joseph made a driving layup. Butler converted an and-one opportunity to take a four-point lead with under two minutes remaining (82-78).
Barron knocked down a three with 14 seconds remaining, which brought the Friars within one point of Butler (82-81).
Joseph missed a game-winning three as time expired.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Four players finished in double figures for the Friars: Joseph (26), Barron (23), Floyd Jr. (17) and Pierre (11).
Rich Barron finished with a career high in points (23) and three pointers made (7).
Corey Floyd finished with a career-high 6 assists.
NOTES:
The Friars have registered a 20-7 mark all-time versus Butler, including a 7-5 record on the road.
The Friars made their most threes in a game since 2019, when they made 16 versus Sacred Heart. The last time they made 16 threes in a BIG EAST Game in 2017 versus St. John's.

The Friars will take on the Xavier Musketeers (14-9, 6-6 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Providence, R.I.
