GENEVA, OHIO – The Providence College men's and women's swimming & diving team opened competition at the BIG EAST Championships on Monday, Feb. 24 at the
Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
The Friars set three school records on day one of the championships, beginning with a strong effort in the women's 800-yard freestyle relay. The team comprised of
Elizabeth Burke,
Julia Renzelmann,
Natalia Robak and
Kendall Eby set a program record in the event with a time of 7:30.19 (sixth place).
The men's 800-yard freestyle relay team also set a new school record with a time of 6:39.20. The team was made up of
Alex Beauchene,
Aidan Puk,
Quinn Schwab and
Gabe Hawkins. Beauchene, who lead off the relay, set a school record during his 200-yard leg, with a time of 1:38.59.
The Friars also competed in the men's and women's 200-yard medley relay on day one.
Ryan Sharp,
Gabe Hawkins,
Nathan Thayer and
Thomas Bowers finished fifth on the men's side with a time of 1:32.00. The women's team of
Bella Lombard,
Lauren Wagner,
Annie Gathof and
Rylie Foley placed seventh (1:44.94).
The Friars return to action tomorrow [Tuesday, Feb. 25] for the second day of competition. Prelims are set to begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by finals action at 5:45 p.m.
