SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Providence College men's basketball team fell to the No. 10/8 Florida Gators, 90-78, on Friday, Nov. 28 at the Jenny Craig Pavillion in San Diego, Calif., in the Rady Children's Invitational. Sophomore Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) led the Friars with 17 points and eight rebounds.
FIRST HALF:
• After Florida scored on their opening possession, Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) hit a step back three to get the Friars on the board
• After Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) converted on a driving spin move layup, Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J) gave the Friars their first lead of the game (7-6) with a layup of his own. (16:26)
• The teams traded buckets over the next few minutes, with Florida taking a 15-11 lead into the under 12 timeout (11:54)
• Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) scored six of the next eight Friar points, as the Gators held a 23-19 lead at the under eight (7:33)
• A 9-1 Florida run pushed the lead to 35-22 (5:27)
• Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) hit a floater, followed by a converted Mela and one to trim the Florida lead back to single digits (3:52).
• Peteris Pinnis (Salaspils, Latvia) converted on an alley-oop from Vaaks before two Edwards free throws closed out the first half scoring
• Florida led at the half, 45-39.
• Providence shot 14-33 (42.4%) from the field, 3-12 (25%) from three, and 8-10 (80%) from the free-throw line.
• Florida shot 12-28 (46.4%) from the field, 4-14 (28.6%) from three, and 15-19 (78.9%) from the free-throw line.
• Mela led the Friars in the first half with 11 points.
• Ruben Chinyelu and Thomas Haugh had 11 points for Florida
• Mela led Providence with four rebounds and two assists at the half
SECOND HALF:
• After a quick 6-0 Florida run, Mela hit two free throws followed by a deep three from Sellers to make it 51-45 (17:32)
• Florida led at the first media of the second half, 56-47 (15:24)
• Sellers and Edwards connected on back-to-back threes to cut the Florida lead to eight (11:58)
• Florida led 81-60 at the under eight (7:34)
• The Friars brought it back to a 13 point game with a Corey Floyd layup (5:56)
• Florida led at the final media timeout 85-70 (3:27)
• Florida defeated Providence 90-76
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Five players finished in double figures for the Friars: Mela (17), Sellers (14), Edwards (13), Floyd Jr. (12), Vaaks (10)
• Mela led the Friars with eight rebounds, while Pinnis grabbed six
• Stefan Vaaks had two three-pointers in the game, marking his eighth game of the season where he has recorded two or more threes.
• Providence shot 26-60 (44.4%) from the field, 6-16 (37.5%) from three, and 20-26 (76.9%) from the free-throw line.
• Florida shot 28-66 (42.4%) from the field, 12-33 (36.4%) from three, and 22-27 (81.5%) from the free-throw line.
