Strong Second Half Propels Friars To 75-64 Victory Over Yale

Sophi Hall scored 16 of her career-high 18 points in the second half; Sabou Gueye matched her career-high with 22 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team overcame a five-point halftime deficit with a strong second half performance to defeat Yale, 75-64, on Nov. 21 in Providence, R.I. Sophi Hall scored 16 of her career-high 18 points in the second half and Sabou Gueye matched her career-high with 22 points for the Friars. Providence improved to 4-1 on the season and have won four-consecutive games for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence opened the game with back-to-back buckets by Payton Dunbar and Gueye.
• Yale responded with an 8-0 run to force a Friars timeout with 6:24 on the clock (8-4).
• Gueye scored five-straight points out of the timeout to give the Friars a 9-8 lead at the 5:45 mark.
• Yale closed the quarter with an 11-7 scoring advantage and claimed a 19-16 lead at the break.
• Gueye scored seven of the Friars' 16 points in the frame, shooting 2-2 from the field and 3-3 from the line.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence tied the game, 19-19.
• Yale answered with an 13-5 run to take an-point lead (32-24) with 1:51 to play.
• The Friars closed within five at the break, outscoring the Bulldogs 5-2 in the final 1:23 of the half (34-29).
• Gueye led the Friars with 11 points at halftime, while Ciniya Moore paced Yale with 12 points
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence outscored Yale 15-5 through the opening 5:35 of the third quarter to claim a 44-39 lead. 
• Hall tallied eight points in the third quarter to help Providence outscore Yale, 23-15.
• The Friars carried a 52-49 lead into the final 10 minutes.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence pushed its lead to double-digits (67-57) with 3:35 remaining.
• Yale cut the lead to nine on two occasions, but it was as close as they would get.
• The Friars held on for the 75-64 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence improved to 4-1 on the season and the squad is in the midst of a four-game win streak. It marks the longest win streak for Providence since winning five-consecutive games from Nov. 9 to Nov. 24 during the 2019-20 season.
• Gueye reached the 20-point mark for the second-straight game and matched her career-high with 22 points. She shot 8-13 from the field and added five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
• Hall scored a career-high 18 points on 5-5 shooting from the field, including a 3-3 showing beyond the arc. She also was perfect from the foul line (5-5).
• Gormley matched her career high with 10 points and added five boards, three assists and a career-best six steals.
Teneisia Brown finished with nine points and a team-high six rebounds.
• Both teams recorded 33 rebounds. Heading into the game, Providence out-rebounded each of its first four opponents.
• The Friars shot a season-best 50-percent from the field (27-54).
• Providence held a 46-30 advantage in scoring in the second half.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will travel to Niceville, Fla. to compete in the 2025 Emerald Coast Classic. Providence will face Middle Tennessee on Monday, Nov. 24 at 12:00 p.m. (ET). The Friars will face either Mississippi State or Alcorn State on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
