Women’s Hockey Defeats Vermont, 5-3, In First Game Of 2025

BURLINGTON, Vt.– The Providence College women's hockey team took down Vermont, 5-3 on Friday, Jan. 3, at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Friars improved to 8-8-3 overall record and a 4-6-2 mark in Hockey East play. The Catmaounts dropped to 4-14-2 overall and 3-8-2 in Hockey East. Goaltender Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) made 27 saves for Providence.

-Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored the Friars' first goal unassisted on the power play at 17:29 of the first period.
 
-Vermont tied it 3:29 into the second period through Kaylee Lewis, with assists from Evelyne Blais-Savoie and Ashley Kokavec.
 
-The Catamounts took the lead on Ashley Kokavec's goal, assisted by Oona Havana and Kaylee Lewis.
 
-Five minutes later, Becker set up Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) for a breakaway goal, Knapp's ninth of the season. The assist marked Becker's third multi-point game this year and 13th of her career.
 
-Providence regained the lead on Peyton Blaney's (Millgrove, Ontario) first collegiate goal, assisted by Dylan Berman (Deephaven, Minn.) and Sarah Davies (Mississauga, Ontario).
 
-The Friars extended their lead to 4-2 when Millie Sirum (Oslo, Norway) scored off a deflection by Jessie Pellerin (Bowmanville, Ontario) on a shot from Lily Martinson (Allen, Texas).
 
-Vermont's Josie Hemp made it 4-3 early in the third period, assisted by Maddy Skelton and Kyla Bent.
 
-Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.) secured the win with an empty-net goal, assisted by Pellerin and Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.).
 
-Walinski made 27 saves for the Friars.
 
-Providence earned its first win in the series since Jan. 13, 2024, after three consecutive ties.
 
-In the Matt Kelly era, the Friars are 4-3-0 in Hockey East games after the winter break.
 
-Providence improved to 5-2-2 when scoring first and 4-1-0 with a power-play goal.
 
-The Friars are now 4-0-0 this season when scoring five or more goals.
 
-The win improved the Friars situational record to 4-1-1 when leading after 40 minutes.
