Women’s Cross Country Ranked Ninth In USTFCCCA National Rankings

Women are ranked No. 1 in Northeast Region and the men are ranked No. 4 in Region.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The USTFCCCA announced today (Aug. 27) the preseason national rankings for Division I Cross Country. The Providence College women's cross country team is ranked ninth nationally. The Friar women's team is just one of two BIG EAST teams ranked nationally and the only BIG EAST squad in the top 10. The Friar men's cross country team is receiving votes. 
 
The announcement of national rankings follows yesterday's release of the organization's regional rankings. The Friar women are ranked first in the Northeast Region and the Friar men are ranked fourth in the Region.
 
This year, the Friar women's team will be led by graduate student Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and senior Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand).  Flockhart placed ninth (20:40.73) at the 2023 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship as well as a 13th (20:09.5) place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals that fall. Flockhart went on to compete at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championship and finished in a time of 20:28.5. Senior Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) had a successful 2023 cross country season as she won the Friar Invitational (13:56.2). May went on to place second (20:06.50) at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. May also placed second (19:37.3) at NCAA Northeast Regionals.
 
Seniors Michael Morgan (Silgo, Ireland) and Abdel Laadjel (Luncan, Ireland) are back to lead the men's squad. Morgan had an impressive junior cross country season as he placed 11th (25:40.97) at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. Morgan went on to finish sixth (29:51.0) at NCAA Northeast Regionals and competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in a time of 30:33.1.Laadjel begins his senior season with the Friars following a successful year. Laadjel won the 2023 Friar Cross Country Invitational in 18:03.6 and went on to place ninth (25:28.60) at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. Laadjel also placed ninth (29:55.0) at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, qualifying him for the NCAA Cross Country Championship which he finished in a time of 30:35.9.
 
The Friars open the 2024 season on Friday, Sept. 6 at the Friar Invitational. The meet will take place at the Mark Coogan Cross Country Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass.  The women's race will begin at 3:15 p.m., and the men's race will follow at 4:00 p.m.
