No. 7- Seed Men’s Basketball Defeated By No.3-Seed and Nationally Ranked Marquette, 79-68, In BIG EAST Semifinals

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The No. 7-seed Providence College men's basketball team (21-13, 10-10 BIG EAST) was defeated by the No. 3-seed and No. 10/10-ranked Marquette Golden Eagles (25-8, 14-6 BIG EAST), 79-68, in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals on Friday, March 15 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. Junior Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) spearheaded the Friar offense scoring a game-high 27 points, including 20 in the second half. Sophomore Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) continued his notable tournament performance, aiding the team with 16 points. Graduate students Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Josh Oduro (Gainesville, Va.) anchored the team, each grabbing 10 rebounds.

"Tough game. Tough loss." Head Coach Kim English said. "We are going to learn from this game and move on. In less than 48 hours we will see where our next post-season destination is."

FIRST HALF:

•The Golden Eagles took an early lead with a 4-0 run. Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) got the Friars on the scoreboard with a three. At the first media timeout (15:47 mark), Marquette held an 11-5 advantage over PC.

• Both teams endured a scoreless stretch for over three minutes. Oduro snapped the scoring drought for PC with a three. •At the 6:58 mark, Marquette surged ahead to a 10-point lead, prompting a PC timeout. The score stood at 28-18.

•The Golden Eagles sustained their momentum, extending their run to 12-0 over a four-minute span. By the final media timeout of the half (3:46 mark) the Friars trailed, 35-18.

•The Friars answered with a 7-0 run late in the second half to cut the deficit to 10.

•Entering halftime, the Friars trailed by 11, 42-31.

• Providence shot 11-29 (37.9%) from the field, 3-15 (20.0%) from three and 6-10 (60.0%) from the free throw line.

• Marquette shot 16-29 (55.2%) from the field, 5-8 (62.5%) from three and 5-7 (71.4%) from the free throw line.

SECOND HALF:

 Pierre kicked off the Friars' second-half scoring with a three. Carter and Pierre combined for an 8-0 run to force a Marquette timeout as the score sat within seven, 46-39.

•The Friars hit a lull, enduring a scoreless stretch for approximately four minutes. At the 12-under timeout (11:55 mark) the Friars trailed, 56-44.

•The Friars gradually managed to close the gap. With 4:35 left to play, Carter made a driving layup to bring the score within three, 68-65.

•Marquette began to pull away in the final minute of the match following a 7-0 surge. The Golden Eagles sealed the victory with a final score of 79-68.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• Providence finished 20-55 (36.4%) from the field, 7-31 (22.6%) from three and 21-28 (75.0%) from the free throw line.

• Marquette finished 26-57 (45.6%) from the field, 8-15 (53.3%) from three and 19-24 (79.2%) from the free throw line.

• Two Friars finished in double figures: Carter (27) and Pierre (16).

• Kam Jones led the way for Marquette with 23 points.

•Carter score 20 of his 27 points in the second half.

• The Friars outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 37-35.

•PC outscored Marquette on second-chance points (13-10), bench points (11-7) and fast-break points (8-4).

NOTES

• This match marked PC's sixth trip to league Semifinals in the last 11 years and the first since 2022.

• The Friars are 15-24 all-time against Marquette, including a 1-2 mark this season and an 0-2 mark versus Marquette in the BIG EAST Tournament.

•The Friars are the first No. 7 seed to make the BIG EAST Semifinals since 2017.

•PC captured the BIG EAST Tournament title in 1994 and 2014.

•PC has posted a 27-41 mark all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament.

Devin Carter was named BIG EAST Player of the Year on 3/13.

Devin Carter was named All-BIG EAST First Team, Josh Oduro was named Honorable Mention and Rich Barron was named to the All-Freshman Team on 3/10.

Devin Carter is the eighth PC player to capture the BIG EAST scoring title (21.4 ppg in 20 league contests).

• The Friars are 18-2 when outrebounding opponents this season.
